Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region XI Regional Director Abdullah V. Matalam challenged graduates of Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU)-Banaybanay Campus to pursue professional excellence while remaining grounded in character, integrity, and service during its 6th Commencement Exercises on June 23.
โ€‹
Addressing the graduating Class of 2026, Director Matalam emphasized that academic achievement and professional competence must be matched by strong moral values. He reminded graduates that success is ultimately defined by the quality of one's character.
โ€‹
โ€œBe excellent in your profession, but even more importantly, be good people,โ€ he said.
โ€‹
The regional director underscored that while education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their careers, society also needs professionals who demonstrate compassion, humility, and ethical leadership.
โ€‹
โ€œIn such a world, technical competence alone is not enough. We need professionals who are grounded in compassion, guided by integrity, and committed to something larger than themselves,โ€ he said.
โ€‹
Matalam encouraged graduates to view their education not merely as a means of securing employment but as a foundation for meaningful service and responsible citizenship. He stressed that leadership should be measured by one's ability to positively influence the lives of others rather than by titles or achievements.
โ€‹
The DILG XI chief also reminded graduates that while academic honors and credentials may open opportunities, integrity remains the true measure of success.
โ€‹
โ€œPeople may forget your grades or your school, but they will remember how you treated others,โ€ Matalam said.
โ€‹
The commencement speaker acknowledged the sacrifices and unwavering support of parents, guardians, and families throughout the students' academic journey. He also commended faculty members and university personnel for helping prepare graduates for both professional careers and responsible citizenship.
โ€‹
As members of the Class of 2026 prepare to enter the workforce and serve their communities, the DILG official urged them to carry forward the values of discipline, humility, compassion, and public service.
โ€‹
The commencement exercises concluded with a challenge for graduates to excel in their chosen professions while remaining steadfast in integrity, kindness, and service.

Hard hats, safety vests, and pins were conferred on civil engineering student interns of Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) during the University's 3rd Hard Hatting, Vesting, and Pinning Ceremony on June 18 as they prepare to enter internship placements and field training with partner establishments.

The ceremony carried the theme โ€œEquipping Future Civil Engineers for Industry Excellence.โ€ Students, parents, faculty members, and representatives from host training establishments attended the event. Representatives from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and J.J. Angeles Construction Corporation also attended and shared insights on engineering practice and workplace expectations.

DOrSU President Dr. Roy G. Ponce urged the interns to strengthen their understanding of engineering fundamentals and continuously evaluate their capabilities as they prepare for engineering practice. He also encouraged them to begin reviewing early for the Civil Engineering Licensure Examination and stressed that preparation for the board examination should begin long before graduation.

During the ceremony, the interns received hard hats, safety vests, and pins before beginning their field assignments and training engagements. The rites signified their entry into a stage of learning that extends beyond academic instruction and into workplace environments.

The interns also took their oath and pledged to uphold the responsibilities and ethical standards expected in the engineering profession.

The program included the presentation and acknowledgment of interns, messages from industry representatives, and a commitment message delivered by intern Eizza Mae M. Dalire. BSCE Program Head Dr. Emmanuel B. Barbas delivered the closing remarks.

The ceremony forms part of the University's efforts to provide students with practical training opportunities and workplace exposure before completing their degree requirements.

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) and the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) formalized a research collaboration in physical education and sports science through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on June 17 at the University Boardroom, DOrSU Main Campus.
โ€‹
The agreement begins a five-year partnership aimed at strengthening research productivity, scholarly publication, and academic engagement between the two state universities. It also establishes a framework for joint research initiatives, faculty and student participation, and knowledge-sharing activities in physical education and sports science.
โ€‹
The partnership builds on the academic ties between the two institutions. During the signing, DOrSU President Dr. Roy G. Ponce emphasized the shared foundations that continue to shape their work.
โ€‹
โ€œWe share the same academic training, the same mentors, and the same commitment to excellence. That common foundation makes this partnership both meaningful and promising,โ€ Ponce said.
โ€‹
Ponce also noted that DOrSUโ€™s development has been influenced by the academic culture of institutions such as USM. He cited the Universityโ€™s continued growth in faculty, personnel, infrastructure, and research facilities as an indication of its readiness to pursue broader academic and research partnerships.
โ€‹
Under the agreement, DOrSU and USM will conduct joint studies, organize conferences and research forums, facilitate the exchange of research mentors and evaluators, share research resources, and pursue collaborative funding opportunities. The partnership will also support the dissemination of research findings through co-authored publications and conference presentations.
โ€‹
USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel welcomed the partnership and underscored its potential to strengthen research and innovation at both institutions.
โ€‹
โ€œWith this collaboration, we can continue to grow together through research, partnership, and innovation while creating greater opportunities in physical education and sports science,โ€ Pimentel said.
