AUGUST 21 | Commemorating Ninoy Aquino

On this day, we honor Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. — the light that pierced a nation’s darkest hour, and the catalyst that awakened the spirit of Filipino democracy.

A relentless journalist, senator, and exile, Ninoy dedicated his life to opposing authoritarian rule during one of the most turbulent chapters of the Philippines' history. Imprisoned for nearly a decade and eventually exiled, his love for his homeland never wavered.

On August 21, 1983, driven by his immense devotion to his people, he stepped off a plane onto the tarmac of the Manila International Airport, famously believing that "the Filipino is worth dying for." Though an assassin's bullet ended his life in that single, fateful moment, it unleashed a tsunami of collective courage. His martyrdom transformed grief into momentum, igniting the 1986 People Power Revolution and proving that peace and unity can tear down the walls of tyranny.

Today, we remember that freedom is not a passive gift, but a perpetual promise. May Ninoy's sacrifice inspire us to keep speaking truth to power, to cherish our democracy, and to live with the same unyielding hope for our nation.
