𝙎𝙖 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙜𝙖 𝙩𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧, 𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙠𝙤𝙢𝙮𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙧!

UNITY STATEMENT OF PANAYANON YOUTH IN SUPPORT OF THE TRANSPORT AND PEOPLE’S STRIKE
Panayanon Youth Stand with Transport Workers and Communities Amid Mega Oil Price Hike!

We, the undersigned student councils, student organizations, student unions, and youth formations across the island of Panay, express our shared concern over the continuing increase in fuel prices and its impact on transport workers, students, workers, farmers, fisherfolk, and consumers. The rising cost of fuel has become part of a broader cost-of-living crisis that increasingly affects the daily lives and livelihoods of Panayanons.

On September 22, another major fuel price increase took effect, with ₱4.88 added to every liter of gasoline, ₱8.82 to diesel, and ₱6.47 to kerosene. This was the third major fuel price increase in September. In total, diesel prices increased by ₱18.31 per liter, gasoline by ₱15.25, and kerosene by ₱16.67 within the month. The Department of Energy has attributed the continuing increases to movements in global oil prices amid tensions in the Middle East.

The impact of these increases is already felt in Western Visayas. In August 2026, the region recorded an 8.4% inflation rate, while transportation inflation reached 16.8%. Iloilo Province recorded 9.7% inflation, while Iloilo City recorded 7.6%. These increases reflect the growing cost of transportation and other goods and services that Panayanons need in their everyday lives.

These price increases do not affect transport workers alone. For jeepney drivers and operators, every increase in diesel means additional operating expenses and reduced take-home income. For commuters, it means greater transportation expenses. For workers and students, it means less money for food, education, and other basic needs. Farmers and fisherfolk likewise face higher costs for fuel and production, while small businesses shoulder increasing expenses for transportation, delivery, and logistics.

The crisis is further felt by families whose incomes remain insufficient to keep pace with the rising cost of living. In Western Visayas, the current minimum wage ranges from ₱520 to ₱550, depending on the sector and establishment.

As young people and students, we are directly affected by these conditions. Many of us come from families of workers, transport drivers, farmers, fisherfolk, and other ordinary people who bear the weight of rising prices. When transportation becomes more expensive and basic commodities continue to rise, education and other necessities become increasingly difficult to sustain.

The transport crisis is therefore not only a concern of drivers and operators. It is a concern of commuters, students, workers, families, and communities across Panay.

In this context, transport and people’s organizations have raised the following demands:
1. Implement the ₱1,200 living wage for workers alongside measures addressing the rising cost of transportation.
2. Remove VAT and excise taxes on fuel and basic commodities, particularly the taxes identified by transport and people’s organizations as contributing to the burden on consumers.
3. Roll back fuel prices to ₱55 per liter and address allegations of excessive pricing in the oil industry.
4. Junk the Oil Deregulation Law (RA 8479) and pursue stronger government regulation of fuel prices.
5. Nationalize the oil industry, particularly the proposal to return Petron to government ownership and provide fuel at more affordable prices.
6. Hold the imperialist US accountable for its wars of aggression.

In this context, the organizers have announced a September 29–30 nationwide transport and people’s strike. In Panay, the strike materials provided by the organizing groups identify Jaro Plaza as the strike center.

As youth and student formations, we recognize the calls being raised for the participation of young people and students in the upcoming strike. The concerns surrounding fuel prices, transportation, wages, and the cost of basic necessities directly affect the conditions in which young people study, work, and live.

We therefore push forward the following calls in relation to the September 29–30 Transport and People’s Strike:
❤️‍🔥 For students and youth organizations across Panay to support and participate in the September 29–30 Transport and People’s Strike, and
❤️‍🔥 For school administrators and educational institutions across Panay to suspend face-to-face classes during the strike and consider the circumstances of students and communities affected by the transport situation.

At this critical moment, the concerns of transport workers and ordinary Panayanons are inseparable from the concerns of the youth. Rising fuel prices affect the cost of transportation, food, education, production, and other basic necessities.

The unity of Panayanon youth is therefore rooted in our shared recognition of the difficulties faced by transport workers, commuters, workers, students, and communities amid the continuing cost-of-living crisis.

SUPPORT THE DEMANDS OF TRANSPORT WORKERS AND AFFECTED COMMUNITIES!
📣 WELGA KITA KITA OIL PRICE HIKE
📣 SWELDO PATAASON! PRESYO PANUBUON!

Huwag tayong magmasid lamang.

NEVER AGAIN! NEVER FORGET!

The University of the Philippines Visayas School of Technology Student Council advises all UPV students to refrain from using the bamboo footbridge shortcut between the College of Arts and Sciences and the road leading to the SoTech Building and University Library.

A recent incident reported involving a student who sustained a splinter injury from the bamboo fiberglass has raised serious safety concerns. The affected student experienced swelling in their hands as a result of the injury. This incident emphasizes a growing concern about the bridge's deteriorating structure.

Despite only being constructed last year, the bridge's pathways that are made out of bamboo slabs are already deteriorating, and holes along the way are clearly noticeable.

Moreover, due to the recent unpredictable weather conditions, the bridge’s danger is even increased by the fact that it can become slippery when wet.

While recent repairs have reportedly taken place, they only involved replacing surface bamboo slabs, a temporary band-aid solution that does not completely address its structural integrity.

Rest assured that the Sotech Student Council is currently coordinating with the Campus Development and Maintenance Office (CDMO) to ensure that this issue is properly raised and addressed.

Kindly use alternative routes until the bridge is properly assessed and repaired by the administration.

Thank you, and stay safe. 🥭💛

25/02/2026

Forty years after EDSA, we pay tribute to a generation that prioritized principles over fear, reflecting the determination of everyday citizens who believed that the nation deserved more. Amid the quiet of defecting military tanks, this issue remains unprotected today, beyond the right to voice concerns, to reassure, and to address security matters, for the sake of justice and truth before we are ready to act.

Ongoing corruption and repression reflect history, as impunity protects scandals and assaults on dissent shrink democratic spaces. Economic difficulties weigh heavily on Filipinos due to inequality, as historical inaccuracies erode EDSA's legacy. In the current sociopolitical environment, EDSA's essence is evident in demonstrations advocating for transparency and justice against the established status quo.

The young people of 1986 left their classrooms to unite with the crowds at EDSA, facilitating educational discussions, cultural activities, and confronting state violence as activists and reporters. This revolution marked the climax of the students' prolonged struggle against imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucratic capitalism that sustain poverty and oppression. Together with the community, students demonstrated their revolutionary strength to initiate real transformation.

We, from the UP Visayas School of Technology Student Council, dedicate ourselves to the essence of EDSA by mobilizing, demonstrating, and standing alongside the people outside our classrooms. We seek accountability from Marcos Jr., Sara Duterte, and corrupt officials, opposing the resurgence of tyranny and advocating for their impeachment. Affirm our right to disagree: disband NTF-ELCAC, restore the UP-DND Accord, and demilitarize localities. We will persist in our struggle for national democracy, agrarian reform, and industrialization until a systemic change is realized.
