As the final days of April come to a close, senior BASS students gathered to commemorate four years marked by shared experiences, challenges, and achievements, as they stand at the threshold of a new chapter in their lives.

On April 30, 2026, at Reimerโ€™s Hall, CLSU, a committee of seniorsโ€”along with the SSSCโ€”carried out this yearโ€™s senior tribute with the title โ€œSALIMBAYAN: Ani ng Buhay, Ugat sa Pangarap, Tungo sa Masa at Sambayananโ€. The theme encapsulates the graduatesโ€™ collective journey as they take flight toward diverse paths, while remaining grounded in the same aspirations that shaped their academic years.

The program commenced with an opening message from Sir Jeorge Dela Cruz, who delivered the department headโ€™s message, Doc Peachy, who was unable to attend due to illness. Through his message, he conveyed her deep regret for not being present on such a significant occasion, as well as her immense pride in the graduates and in the individuals they have become. He also imparted words of encouragement, setting a reflective and inspiring tone for the ceremony.

The program proceeded with the awarding of recognitions, where students received major, minor, and special awards in acknowledgment of their academic performance, leadership, and contributions. The awarding was facilitated by faculty members, including Sir Justine Trey Cubos and Sir Marvin Soriano, together with other members of the department, whose presence underscored their continued support for the graduating class.

Beyond the formalities of the program, it was the shared moments of pride, gratitude, and quiet celebration that rendered the event truly meaningful. The smiles exchanged, the recognition received, and the memories revisited served as a testament to the graduatesโ€™ collective journey. As they move forward to their respective paths, they carry with them not only the knowledge and skills they have acquired, but also the enduring connections and values that will continue to guide them in service to the masa at sambayanan.

The ability to learn and explore does not end within the four walls of a classroom; it continues in the field, where knowledge is applied, perspectives are broadened, and growth takes place.

In these photos are moments of focus, preparation, and quiet anticipation as incoming On-the-job trainees of the Department of Social Sciences take part in their Pre-Departure Orientation, April 29, 2026.

Each frame captures more than a segment of the programโ€”it reflects readiness in the making, as students engage with discussions, absorb guidance, and prepare for the transition from classroom learning to field experience.

Together, these photos portray the beginning of a professional journey shaped by responsibility, awareness, and purpose.

Best of luck to all incoming trainees as they navigate their path toward professional practice.

- ๐ด ๐ต๐‘ข๐‘”โ€™๐‘  ๐ฟ๐‘–๐‘“๐‘’ (1998)

In celebration of May Day, let us walk across time and space and remember the cries that fought hard for the rights that our noble workers currently enjoy and strive for. Much like our ant friends, what was now known as โ€œInternational Labour Dayโ€ started with a realization.

In May 1, 1886 at Chicago, U.S., where people are forced to work in unsafe conditions reaching up to 16 hours a day, marked the first day of a series of strikes which involved an estimation of 40,000 people in protest for the eight-hour workday.

The strike was well-coordinated and largely nonviolent until the 3rd day of May where striking workers attempted to confront strikebreakers which resulted in at least two workersโ€™ death by the hands of the police. The violence continued on May 4th at the Haymarket bombing which ensued the death of seven officers and at least four civilians. These fights for basic human rights proceeded with more imprisonment and deaths of what they call โ€œHaymarket Martyrsโ€ [1].

A year later, the Second International, an international organisation for workers and socialists, declared May 1st as International Workersโ€™ Day.

Likewise in the Philippines. On May 1, 1903, thousands of workers led by the Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas marched to Malacaรฑang. Their voices rose in a historic demand for better working conditions, higher wages, and independence from U.S. colonial rule [2]. A bill would then be passed by the Philippine assembly on April 8, 1908 officially recognizing May 1 as a nationwide holiday [3].

This day reminds us of the plights and the sacrifices of workers all over the globe. Forcing us to think not only of ourselves but for the masses who propels the machinery of this modern world.

In an age of soaring inflation and rising fuel prices, where jeepney drivers and daily wage earners carry the weight of making ends meet each day, this moment holds something deeper. Labor Day becomes a space to remember their quiet sacrifices, their long hours, and the strength it takes to keep going despite uncertainty.

May this day move us to listen more closely, to stand more firmly, and to continue pushing for a future where every worker is met with fairness, dignity, and the freedom to live with security and hope.

The Department of Social Sciences is currently conducting its Pre-Departure Orientation for incoming On-the-Job trainees as they gear up for their practicum, today, April 29, 2026!

From the National Anthem and Prayer to essential discussions on the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313) and Anti-Sexual Harassment Act (RA 7877), the third-year students are being oriented on the values and responsibilities expected in their professional journey.

Sessions on internship obligations, grievance mechanisms, work ethics, travel plans, and portfolio preparation are also in full swingโ€”ensuring that trainees are equipped, informed, and ready to step into real-world practice.

As this new chapter begins, may they move forward with competence, integrity, and purpose.

The Electoral Board Committee is committed to holding an inclusive and transparent election where every student gets a fair chance to participate. Due to recent logistical adjustments and to make sure everyone can exercise their right to vote, we are officially extending the voting period for the Social Sciences Student Council Election 2026. This extension is meant to give our department more time to engage with the democratic process.

The official Google Form for voting will stay open until tomorrow, April 20, 2026, at 5:00 PM. We highly encourage those who haven't voted yet to check the link and cast their ballots.

Once the polls officially close, the Electoral Board will proceed with the final tallying and verification of votes to ensure the absolute integrity of the results. The official proclamation of winners will take place on April 22, 2026.

We thank the student body for their continued patience and for making their voices heard in the Social Science Student Council Elections 2026.
