PHASE II OF THE ADMISSION PROCESS: MEDICAL EXAMINATION FOR THE INCOMING FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS OF PLMUN

This week marks the start of the medical examination, the second step in the admissions process for our new freshmen. Successful PCAT passers gathered at the covered court, patiently waiting for their turn. The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa-University Clinic together with the Emergency Response Team, guided applicants through the medical procedures to ensure everything ran smoothly and was organized.

This year, Prolab is handling the physical exam, urinalysis, ECG, and chest X-ray. Meanwhile, the Drug Abuse Prevention Control (DAPCO) Muntinlupa is our partner for the drug testing.

We remind all incoming freshmen to follow their assigned schedules closely so they can move forward to the next stage of admissions. Don’t forget to bring enough water to stay hydrated throughout the process!

🎗️🩸🦠World AIDS Day 2025: Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response

On December 1, the world unites to commemorate World AIDS Day 2025 under the urgent theme:

“Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response.”

This theme is a direct call to action, acknowledging that recent global crises, coupled with significant international funding cuts and shifts in health priorities, have severely disrupted decades of hard-won progress against HIV/AIDS. It emphasizes the need for renewed political will, human-rights-centered approaches, and innovative strategies to ensure the global target of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 remains achievable.

The focus is on:

• Sustaining Funding: Reversing the shock caused by funding shortfalls that have crippled prevention and community-led services, particularly for vulnerable populations.

• Empowering Communities: Recognizing that community-led
organizations are vital for reaching marginalized groups and delivering effective, non-discriminatory care.

• Addressing Inequalities: Fighting against punitive laws and social stigma that act as significant barriers, preventing key populations (such as men who have s*x with men, transgender people, and young people) from accessing essential testing and treatment.

The Updated Status of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines (as of Q3 2025)

The Philippines remains a country of critical concern, often cited as having the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region. The status updates, based on data from the Department of Health (DOH) in 2025, highlight a crisis demanding urgent transformation:

Alarming Rise in Cases!!!

• Surging Daily Cases: The average daily number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in the country is now significantly higher, averaging 57 to 61 cases per day in the first and third quarters of 2025.

• Significant Increase: The DOH reported 5,583 new HIV cases from July to September 2025, representing a 22% increase compared to the same quarter in 2024. The first quarter of 2025 already saw a 50% increase in new cases compared to Q1 2024.

• Cumulative Figures: As of September 2025, the country’s cumulative total of confirmed HIV cases since 1984 is approaching 160,000.

The Youth and Late Diagnosis Challenge:

• Youth Epidemic: The epidemic is concentrated among the youth. The most significant proportional increase in new cases has been observed in the 15-24 age group, and nearly 80% of all cases occur in those aged 15-34.

• Late Diagnosis: A high percentage of new cases are still diagnosed at an Advanced HIV Infection stage. In Q1 2025, 22% of newly diagnosed individuals had advanced HIV, signaling critical delays in testing and linking patients to care.

Gaps in the 95-95-95 Targets: The Philippines is far from achieving the UNAIDS "95-95-95" targets for 2030 (95% diagnosed, 95% on treatment, 95% virally suppressed). As of March 2025, the national cascade showed:

• Diagnosis: Only 55% of the estimated Persons Living with HIV (PLHIV) are aware of their status.

• Treatment: Only 66% of those diagnosed are currently on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).

• Viral Suppression: Only 40% of those on ART have achieved viral suppression.

Philippine Response to Disruption: In line with the 2025 theme, the DOH and partners are intensifying efforts, particularly in response to external funding cuts:

• Expanded PhilHealth Coverage: The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has scaled up its HIV/AIDS coverage (OHAT Package), significantly increasing the annual benefit to cover all ART and related services, regardless of the patient's clinical status.

• Workplace Intervention: The DOH has actively brought HIV education and services (like free testing and PrEP) directly to workplaces, recognizing that the working population (25-34 years old) is highly affected.

• PrEP Expansion: Enrollment in Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is increasing, though efforts are needed to ensure high retention rates for consistent refills.

The crisis in the Philippines demands that the entire health system "Overcome Disruption" by prioritizing domestic funding, strengthening community partnerships, and aggressively expanding confidential, non-discriminatory services to "Transform the AIDS Response" and secure a better future for its vulnerable populations.
