Congratulations to faculty researchers Dr. Lilibeth P. Coronel and Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan of MSU at Naawan, along with their co-author from Siquijor State College, for their recent publication in the International Journal of Engineering Trends and Technology, a Scopus-indexed Q3 journal.

Their study, โ€œEngineered Nanoparticles Cytotoxicity Prediction Using an Enhanced Convolutional Neural Network,โ€ addresses the growing need for more accurate tools in assessing the potential health risks of engineered nanoparticlesโ€”materials widely used in science and industry. Recognizing the limitations of traditional machine learning approaches, the team developed a novel technique called Horizontal Sequence Pooling (HSP) integrated into a deep learning model. Their enhanced CNN-HSP model outperformed standard methods, achieving impressive accuracy in predicting cytotoxicity based on complex data sets. With an R-squared value of 0.9975, the model showed a remarkable ability to align predicted and actual results, offering a powerful tool for improving safety in nanomaterial development.

This publication makes a significant contribution to the growing field of nanotechnology, particularly in ensuring the safe and responsible use of engineered nanoparticles. By offering a more accurate and interpretable method for predicting cytotoxicity, the study helps bridge a critical gap in risk assessment, supporting researchers, developers, and regulators in making science-based decisions. Being part of this research is a source of pride for MSU at Naawan, as it aligns with our commitment to safety, innovation, and sustainability.

Congratulations to Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Ms. Sherley Ann T. Inocente, and Ms. Marybeth Hope T. Banda of the Research on Environment and Nanotechnology Laboratories of Mindanao State University at Naawan, together with their co-authors from MSU- Marawi Main Campus, for their recent publication in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, a Scopus-indexed Q3 conference proceedings.

Their paper, โ€œCharacterization of Microplastic Pollution in Surface Waters of Agus River, Mindanao, Philippines,โ€ sheds light on the growing concern of microplastic contamination in one of Mindanaoโ€™s major river systems. By collecting samples from the upstream to downstream areas of the Agus River and analyzing them using microscopy and FTIR techniques, the team identified 84 pieces of microplastics, mostly filaments, fragments, and fibers, with a notable variation in pollution levels across the sampling sites. These findings reveal that even non-urban river systems are not spared from the pervasive threat of microplastic pollution.

This study does more than document pollution, it lays the groundwork for future research on macroplastic reflux and calls attention to the broader ecological impacts of plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems. As a university grounded in science and service, we are proud that this meaningful work comes from our very own research laboratories.

Once again, congratulations to our outstanding researchers! MSU at Naawan takes great pride in this important scientific milestone, which reinforces our commitment to advancing research on environmental pollution and safeguarding our aquatic ecosystems.

Congratulations to Ms. Darlene M. Reble, Dr. Wilfredo H. Uy, Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Dr. Anabelle Dece A. Espadero, and Dr. Venus E. Leopardas of Mindanao State University at Naawan for their recent publication in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, a Scopus-indexed Q3 conference proceedings.

Their paper, titled โ€œThe Prevalence of Microplastics in Farmed Seaweed ๐พ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ฃ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ง๐‘–๐‘– in Panguil Bay, Philippines,โ€ investigates the presence and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in farmed seaweed and surrounding water samples from two aquaculture sites in Panguil Bayโ€”Ozamiz and Kolambugan.

Using FTIR analysis, the team identified 1,298 microplastic particles, with higher concentrations found in water samples than in the seaweed itself. Significant differences were observed in microplastic abundance, size, color, morphotype, and polymer composition across locations and sample types. Fibers and filaments were the dominant morphotypes, while rayon, polyester, and azlon emerged as the most common polymers. Notably, washing seaweed with distilled water reduced microplastic concentration by 33%, showing potential as a simple mitigation strategy.

The study highlights ๐พ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ฃ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ง๐‘–๐‘– as a potential biomonitor for microplastic pollution and underscores the need for enhanced monitoring protocols, waste management practices, and environmental policies to address marine microplastic contamination in seaweed farming areas.

This remarkable achievement underscores MSU at Naawanโ€™s dedication to advancing marine science and tackling pressing environmental challenges through impactful research.

Congratulations to Ms. Sherley Ann T. Inocente, Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Ms. Marybeth Hope T. Banda, Mr. Jhon Carlo P. Aporbo, and Ms. Floremie B. Apdian of Mindanao State University at Naawan, along with their esteemed co-authors from Mindanao State University โ€“ Marawi (Main Campus), for their recent publication in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, a Scopus-indexed Q3 conference proceeding.

Their paper, titled โ€œA pathway of land-based plastic debris into the marine environment: The status of Cagayan de Oro River,โ€ sheds light on the critical role of rivers in transporting plastic waste from land to sea. The study focuses on the downstream part of the Cagayan de Oro Riverโ€”one of Northern Mindanaoโ€™s most vital waterwaysโ€”which is heavily affected by urbanization and poor waste management.

Over a ten-day monitoring period at three bridge sites, the research team recorded plastic flux, flow velocity, and polymer composition. Results revealed an average influx of 10.5 plastic debris items per hour, with food packaging, bottles, and plastic bagsโ€”mainly polyethylene and multilayer materialsโ€”being the most prevalent. These findings confirm that the Cagayan de Oro River is a major pathway for plastic waste entering marine ecosystems.

The study emphasizes the urgent need for evidence-based waste management strategies, particularly in upstream urban areas, to mitigate the downstream impacts of riverine plastic pollution on our coastal and marine environments.

Once again, congratulations to our outstanding researchers! MSU at Naawan takes immense pride in this scholarly milestone, which reflects our commitment to meaningful environmental research and sustainability.

Congratulations to Mr. Edwin E. Dumalagan Jr. of the College of Marine and Allied Sciences, together with his co-authors from The Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines, on the successful publication of their research in Hydrogeology Journal, a leading Q1 Scopus-indexed journal in the field.

Their paper, โ€œ๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข, ๐˜—๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด,โ€ takes a closer look at submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), an important but often overlooked source of nutrients flowing into our oceans. Using acoustic tools, the team was able to map areas of bubbly and non-bubbly SGD along the volcanic coastlines of Mabini, Batangas, and explored how these are shaped by underground features like fractures, faults, and different rock layers.

The study offers valuable insights into how groundwater interacts with coastal ecosystems, knowledge that is crucial for managing water resources, understanding nutrient dynamics, and assessing the vulnerability of coastal areas to environmental change. By helping to refine methods for detecting and mapping submarine groundwater discharge, this research contributes meaningfully to both local and global efforts in coastal conservation, marine resource management, and climate resilience.

Once again, we sincerely congratulate Mr. Dumalagan Jr. and his co-authors for this meaningful contribution to science. This accomplishment is a reflection of their dedication and hard work, and we are honored to celebrate this milestone with them.
