Dr. Marlon S. Pontillas, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC), has successfully published his extension paper titled “Empowering Voices: A Three-Year Intervention to Reduce Public Speaking Anxiety among ESL Learners” in the Journal of Social and Scientific Education (Vol. 2, No. 3, pp. 226–236). The paper is accessible online at https://doi.org/10.58230/josse.v2i3.359.
The publication outlines a structured, research-based intervention program to reduce public speaking anxiety among English as a Second Language (ESL) learners.
Implemented at CSPC and its partner institution, Zeferino Arroyo High School, the three-year program, anchored on the Popsispeak framework, spanned progressive phases: “Speak Up!” (2022), “Speak Out!” (2023), and “Speak Your Voice!” (2024).
Through impromptu speaking exercises, peer collaboration, and continuous feedback, the program significantly improved participants’ confidence, articulation, fluency, and delivery skills.
Evaluative data highlighted substantial reductions in public speaking anxiety, confirming the effectiveness of experiential and supportive learning approaches.
Dr. Pontillas emphasized that the intervention not only strengthens academic and professional communication but also contributes to broader development goals, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by fostering inclusivity and employability through enhanced English proficiency.
The study recommends extending training durations, integrating real-world speaking tasks, and maintaining non-judgmental environments for continuous learner improvement.
Its findings suggest that structured interventions like Popsispeak can be replicated in other academic and professional settings to empower individuals to overcome communication barriers.
This publication further cements CSPC’s commitment to impactful research and extension programs that respond to institutional and community needs. It showcases the role of education in building confidence, competence, and future-ready graduates.
