BREAKING: The House Committee on Justice has unanimously approved its committee report on the two impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, with all 55 of its members voting in favor of validating the report.

The committee report synthesized the impeachment raps into four articles, which cited her "alleged misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, and apparent death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family."

This approval advances the impeachment proceedings further, as the document will be submitted to the House plenary for voting, where it requires one-third of representatives (106 out of 318 members) to agree to the impeachment for referral to the Senate for trial.

According to Justice Committee Chair Rep. Gerville Luistro, the House plenary session may convene on May 11 to accept or decline the impeachment articles.

As we commemorate World Press Freedom Day today, we are reminded that the safety of journalists is inseparable from the health of our democracy. Yet, the spaces for truth are shrinking under the weight of relentless red-tagging and systematic violations.

For 70 years, Atenews has refused to remain silent. We are dedicated to being an avenue for youth representation and sectoral advocacy, connecting the realities of the classroom to the broader struggle. Amid rising social tensions and direct attacks on community and campus journalism, we hold the line.

We cannot look away as truth-tellers are criminalized and silenced. Today, we honor the journalists who paid the ultimate price for the truthโ€”including RJ Ledesma, who lost his life documenting the struggles of marginalized farming communitiesโ€”and we stand firm in solidarity with those who are unjustly detained, including Frenchie Mae Cumpio.

End the state-sponsored attacks against truth-tellers. Free Frenchie Mae Cumpio. Journalism is not a crime.
