๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ is celebrated every June 12 to commemorate the countryโs declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898, led by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite. During the historic event, the Philippine flag was first unfurled and the national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, was played by a marching band, without lyrics. Although independence was proclaimed, it wasnโt recognized by Spain, which later ceded the Philippines to the United States through the Treaty of Paris. True sovereignty was only achieved on July 4, 1946, after World War II. However, in 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal officially moved the celebration to June 12 to honor the original declaration. A unique detail: when the red part of the flag is displayed on top, it means the country is in a state of war.
