The College of Maritime Education (COMEd) conducted Pre Basic Training (BT), Security Awareness Training, and Seaferers with Designated Security Duties (SAT-SDSD) Orientation Seminar at the PIT Conference Hall and Interaction Center (CHIC) on April 21.
Mate Daisy Mhar P. Pitoy, the Onboard Training Supervisor, spearheaded the Orientation Seminar, discussing detailed information and requirementsโhelping the 2nd-year maritime students to be prepared in their upcoming Basic Training, that will have five batches of trainees, that will be held in the summer of 2026.
The seminar focused on the Basic Training, a mandatory 10-day course required under the International Maritime Organizationโs Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), which ensures that all seafarers are equipped with essential safety and survival skills before working onboard; it will also hone the character and discipline of the cadets.
Mate Pitoy noted key aspects of the training including payments, expenses, and associated cost as well as the requirements needed for the registration and enrollment.
She also highlights the accomodation set up and inclusions.
Moreover, the students were also informed through the pre-shipboard requirements, which include preparing and securing a passport after the Basic training, students must obtain clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and acquiring essential maritime identification such as the Seafarerโs Record Book (SRB) and Seafarerโs Identity Document (SID).
The orientation aims to prepare future maritime professionals not only for the technical aspects of training but also for the responsibilities and documentation required before stepping into their careers at sea.
