The open jam session and guided discussion featured Sir Tots Tolentino, a passionate saxophonist in the Filipino Jazz scene. Attendees were able to inquire about how Filipino jazz was uniquely Filipino, and some even had the opportunity to jam with him.
Jazz improvisation begins when all the musicians present agree on a tune and its corresponding chord progression. Chord changes serve as a roadmap for the players, while the rhythm section provides harmonic and rhythmic support. This builds up into a musical conversation, as each musician takes turns in contributing melodic lines in real-time.
Thank you, Sir Tots, for jamming with us, for the deep dive into jazz creativity, and for sharing your thought process on improvisations! May you continue demonstrating your soulful sound with those around you ๐ถ
