College of Health Sciences Crowned Champion in the Interdepartmental Debate Competition

The College of Health Sciences (CHS) proudly emerged as the Champion in this year’s Interdepartmental Debate Competition, concluding a dynamic and meaningful Championship and Closing Program hosted by the MSU-Sulu Debate Society held today, December 03, 2025, at the Human Development Training Center, MSU-Sulu Campus. In a gripping final round, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) secured victory over the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) through strong reasoning, persuasive delivery, and strategic argumentation.

Special Awards were also given:

Best Debater: Ms. Meela Rixsa A. Alfad (2nd Speaker from CBAA)
Best Speaker: Mr. Abysenna Jarak (2nd Speaker from CHS)
Best Rebuttal: Mr. Ladimar Pawaki (3rd Speaker from CHS)

This year’s competition brought together outstanding debaters from various colleges and both senior high school and laboratory high school, each showcasing exceptional critical thinking, teamwork, and eloquence. Their participation made the event not only competitive but also inspiring for the entire academic community.

The Final Round was adjudicated by a highly respected panel composed of: As Chairman, Atty. Shervilyn Jaradil, College Secretary and a faculty of the MSU-Sulu College of Law Extension, and as Members, Ms. Ginalyn Forneza, Librarian from the Sulu Provinvcial Library, and Dr. Satrana Malik, Faculty from the College of Teacher Education, Sulu State College.

Their expertise and impartial judgment ensured a fair, enriching, and credible competition.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to the MSU-Sulu Administration, led by the MSU-Sulu Chancellor, Prof. Nagder J. Abdurahman and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Services, Prof. Norman A. Abdurahman for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the entire event.

Special commendation is given to the hardworking Organizers, the MSU-Sulu Debate Society Core Team, whose dedication made the program a wholehearted success. 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘿𝙚𝙗𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙨

The Interdepartmental Debate Competition continued to build momentum as departments and schools battled through the intense Quarterfinal Rounds. Each participating team showcased sharp reasoning, powerful rhetoric, and commendable teamwork—reflecting the institution’s strong commitment to fostering critical thinking and academic excellence.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟭:
The College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) went against Senior High School (SHS). Both sides delivered well-crafted arguments, but CBAA dominated the round and secured the win.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟮:
The College of Education (COED) and the College of Health Sciences (CHS) engaged in a highly competitive match. With strong rebuttals and well-supported claims, CHS emerged as the victor.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟯:
MSU-Sulu Laboratory High School faced the College of Public Affairs (CPA). Through solid reasoning and organized delivery, the Laboratory High School team clinched the win and advanced.

After the three rounds, the scores of all winning teams were ranked to determine their placement and progression in the tournament. According to the judges’ scoring:
• 1st Place: CBAA — earning the highest score among the winners and automatically securing a direct slot in the Championship Round.
• 2nd Place: CHS
• 3rd Place: MSU-Sulu Laboratory High School

With this ranking, the Semifinals will feature a compelling face-off between CHS (2nd placer) and MSU-Sulu Laboratory High School (3rd placer). The winner of this semifinal match will advance to challenge CBAA in the championship.

The Quarterfinals were adjudicated by an esteemed panel composed of Atty. Shervilyn Jaradin (Chairman), Ms. Ginalyn Forneza, and Ms. Fatima Shaina Shadjari Dammang, whose expertise ensured fair and insightful evaluation throughout the competition.

As the debate continues to progress, anticipation grows for the upcoming rounds that promise even more spirited, thought-provoking, and intellectually enriching exchanges.

MSU-Sulu Successfully Concludes 2nd and 3rd part Opening Round of the Interdepartmental Debate Competition

The Mindanao State University-Sulu, through the initiative of the MSU-Sulu Debate Society, successfully held the 2nd and 3rd Part Opening Rounds of the Interdepartmental Debate Competition on November 05-06, 2025 at the HDTC, MSU-Sulu Campus.

For the 2nd Part first match, the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) faced off against the College of Education (COED). After a compelling exchange of arguments, the COED team emerged as the winning team.

2nd part 1st Round Awardees:
🏅Best Debater: Salman M. Khan (COED 2nd Speaker)
🏅Best Speaker: Faulynnihar S. Barrahani (COED 1st Speaker)
🏅Best Rebuttal: Fhayruz A. Lattore (COED 3rd Speaker)

In the second round, the College of Health and Sciences (CHS) team triumphed over the College of Agricultire (COA) after a dynamic and well-balanced debate.

2nd part 2nd Round Awardees:

🏅Best Speaker: Nursaeda Musaiya (CHS 1st Speaker)
🏅Best Rebuttal: Ladimar Pawaki (CHS 3rd Speaker)

For the 3rd part 1st Round, the MSU-Sulu Laboratory Highschool won against the College of Fisheries (COF) in a very well-mannered debate.

3rd part 1st Round Awardees:

🏅Best Speaker: Din Rehan M. Amirul (MSU-Sulu Lab. Highschool 2nd Speaker)

For the 3rd part 2nd Round, the College of Public Affairs (CPA) paved its victory against the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM).

3rd part 2nd Round Awardees:

🏅Best Speaker: Lorina Sailama (CPA 1st Speaker)
🏅Best Rebuttal: Ibniraj Mukarrama (CPA 2nd Speaker)

The success of these rounds marks another step in cultivating a new generation of thinkers and communicators. Through platforms like this, students are empowered to voice their insights, challenge ideas, and strengthen their confidence, proving that debate is not merely about winning, but about learning and growing together.

These opening rounds was graced by esteemed judges who provided insightful comments and constructive feedback to the debaters. Mr. Muner Saradi, Faculty from the College of Education, Prof. Fatima Sharidzka Tulawie Hayudini, Faculty from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy, Ms. Amina Aming from the ESGO, and Dr. Nurmini U. Supian, Director of the Educational Scholarship Grant Office. Their observations not only highlighted the strengths of each team but also offered valuable guidance for improvement, inspiring the participants to refine their skills as they move forward in the competition.

The competition will continue in the coming weeks as different colleges who successfully won the Opening Rounds battles for the championship title, showcasing the brilliance and debating prowess of MSU-Sulu’s finest minds.

MSU-Sulu Successfully Concludes 1st Opening Round of the Interdepartmental Debate Competition

The Mindanao State University-Sulu, through the initiative of the MSU-Sulu Debate Society, successfully held the 1st Opening Round of the Interdepartmental Debate Competition on October 22, 2025 at the HDTC, MSU-Sulu Campus.

The event formally opened with an inspiring message from Prof. Norman A. Abdurahman, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Services, who emphasized the importance of debate as a platform to cultivate critical thinking, confidence, and intellectual engagement among students.

For the first match, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) faced off against the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA). After a compelling exchange of arguments, the CBAA team emerged as the winning team.

MSU-Sulu Debate Society Successfully Conducts Debate Training Workshop

The Mindanao State University–Sulu Debate Society successfully conducted its very first activity, the Debate Training Workshop with the theme “Think Smart. Speak Brave. Debate with Heart.” today, October 16, 2025 at the HDTC, MSU-Sulu Campus. The event gathered aspiring student debaters from various colleges as well as the Senior High School and Laboratory High School, who were eager to develop their critical thinking, argumentation, and public speaking skills.

The activity was graced by key university officials, Chancellor Prof. Nagder Abdurahman, Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Prof. Abuzamier Asanji, and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Services Prof. Norman Andurahman—whose presence and support inspired participants to pursue academic excellence through debate and discourse.

In his message, Chancellor Prof. Nagder Abdurahman commended the efforts of the MSU-Sulu Debate Society for initiating the workshop. He underscored that debate is not merely about argument and competition, but a platform to promote understanding, leadership, and intellectual growth.

The workshop featured two engaging sessions. The first session, “Debate with Heart,” was led by Ms. Fatima Ayesha Ventura-Nasir, adviser of the MSU-Sulu Debate Society, who encouraged participants to see debate as a means to advocate with empathy and conviction.

The second session, “Introduction to Debate,” was facilitated by Ms. Fatima Shaina Sadjari Dammang, Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences, who discussed the fundamentals of debating which are covering structure, speaker roles, and argumentation strategies.

To put their learning into practice, participants took part in a mock debate, where selected teams from the College of Business Administration and Accounting (CBAA) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) showcased their skills in reasoning and persuasion. The activity highlighted the students’ growing confidence and ability to construct well-founded arguments.

At the end of the mock debate, two students from the College of Business Administration and Accounting were recognized for their outstanding performance, earning the titles of Best Speaker and Wittiest Rebuttal.

Guiding the team throughout the event were the Debate Society’s Consultants, Ms. Fatima Al-Raiza Sadjari-Jundam and Mr. Muner Saradi, whose expertise and support contributed greatly to the success of the workshop.

In closing, the organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the university administration, guest speakers, consultants, and participants for their commitment and cooperation. The event stands as another milestone for the MSU-Sulu Debate Society in its mission to empower students to think smart, speak brave, and debate with heart.
