UP Diliman Environmental Sustainability Month

UP Diliman Environmental Sustainability Month April is UP Diliman's Environmental Sustainability Month, as officially declared in the Office of the Chancellor Memorandum No. FRN-22-045.

08/04/2024

“The ‘Pilot Project for Plastic-Free Vending in UP Diliman’ (Plastic-Free Vending in UPD) that encouraged the removal or replacement of plastic containers among food vendors in UPD resulted in ‘considerable reductions in the use and disposal of single-use plastics among [UPD] customers, with an overall reduction of 43%.’

“The result was part of the report ‘Breaking the Plastic Habit: A Guidance Note and Practical Toolkit’ (Report) published by the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN (ERIA) and East Asia and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).”

The UP Task Force on Environmental Sustainability, in partnership with UP Institute of Civil Engineering and Diliman Environmental Management Office - UPD, is implementing the pilot project for Plastic-Free Vending in UP Diliman.

The goals of the project are to illustrate the feasibility of going plastic-free for campus vendors, and to provide insights on vendor and consumer behaviors toward plastic reduction. The results of the project will aid in establishing model sites of good waste management practices in UPD for future expansion.

The ff pilot sites are provided with reusable/compostable alternatives to plastic packaging and utensils to test alternative packaging acceptability and practicality:
• University Food Service cafeteria
• UP ICE canteen
• Melchor Hall canteen
• CASAA Diliman Brew
• Tess' Store near Vinzons Hall
• ArkiVickie

We encourage all UP students, faculty and staff members, and visitors to participate in the project by:
✓ bringing their own baunan (BYOB)
✓ using alternatives to plastic products
✓ segregating their wastes properly

The food wastes and compostable materials from the pilot sites will be collected and processed regularly by the UP Diliman Environmental Management Office (UP DEMO).

*The project is funded by the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris - ERIA and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies.

We are exactly a week away from the Open Climate Science webinar!

Climate change science and researchers play key roles in bridging the gap between climate information and climate action, and ‘open’ science is crucial to achieving this. For decades, there have been efforts to rethink the role of the scientist and the practice of science, from that of a detached observer to one who is embedded in society. How do we balance the accompanying tensions in the face of the complexity of climate change? In open science, what does ‘open’ mean and what counts as ‘science’?

Join us for a panel discussion next Wednesday, 15 February 2023, 4:30 to 6:00pm (GMT+8) as we seek to articulate and navigate the tensions of the meanings and practice of open science in addressing climate change. Our panel will consist of Ms. Fiona Spuler of the University of Reading hub in the UK, Dr. Christopher D. Jack of the University of Cape Town hub in South Africa, Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, SJ of the Ateneo de Manila University hub in the Philippines, Dr. Noralene Uy of the Climate and Disaster Resilience Innovations Program of the Anthropological and Sociological Initiatives of the Ateneo (CDRI-ASIA), and Mr. John Leo C. Algo of Living Laudato Si' Philippines.

We hope to see you then!

Congratulations to the University of the Philippines College of Law for winning the first ever Most Sustainable Lantern Award during the UPD Lantern Parade 2022 last night! 🎉🎉🎉

Curious to know why they're the winner? Take a glimpse of their lantern here: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=582083520591767&set=pcb.582083653925087

When the UP Diliman Task Force on Environmental Sustainability announced the special award we’re giving tonight to the Most Sustainable Lantern, we were really happy to see so many of our units make extra effort to make their lanterns eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable, from the choice of materials – some were recycled, reusable, or even compostable – to the mode of transportation – whether mechanized or manually pushed forward. Especially in large events like this, where we generate so much waste, it’s so important for us as a community to keep sustainability foremost in our minds during these festivities.

Among the lanterns, one stood out for its most innovative use of materials and grand showcase of the UP fighting spirit. It is the only lantern that is almost fully biodegradable – some parts reusable – and therefore anticipates little waste left in the environment after tonight’s festivities. For its use of leaves as its dominant material of production, and the inspiring message imbibed by its highly creative manipulation of this biodegradable material, the Green Lantern Award is given to…the UP College of Law!
