A group of policy and technical experts was convened for the PEAC Data Analytics brainstorming meeting presided over by Executive Director Doris Fernandez Ferrer on July 22, 2026 at the Makati Diamond Residences.

The PEAC is in partnership with the Ateneo Business Insights Laboratory for Development (BUILD) to develop the analytics capabilities of the PEAC. Roberto Martin Galang, PhD, Dean of the John Gokongwei School of Management at Ateneo de Manila University, facilitated the focus group discussion to further refine the core questions, data priorities, and analytical roadmap to inform program improvement, policy development, and advocacy initiatives of the PEAC. The team from Ateneo BUILD was led by Joseph Benjamin R. Ilagan, PhD, Director, and Andres J. Montiel, Consultant.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? 🤔

New research from Baguio City, Philippines, investigates the supply chain challenges faced by Tantamco’s Fine Foods, a renowned 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘣𝘰𝘯𝘨 shop that relies heavily on fresh strawberries for its jams. The study reveals that the local strawberry trade is largely governed by informal, trust-based arrangements. While these relationships provide flexibility, they also expose both farmers and processors to significant risks, such as extreme price volatility, inconsistent quality, and sudden supply disruptions during the rainy and typhoon seasons.

Drawing on qualitative insights from local farmers, traders, and procurement staff, the researchers propose a sustainable sourcing strategy. The study highlights that implementing contract farming agreements, investing in cold storage facilities, and utilizing simple digital tools for supply monitoring can stabilize costs, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen equitable farmer-buyer partnerships.

OBF UPDATE: David Lance Paez (2 BS ME) and Jonver Logan Rada (2 BS CS) of the Harvesync team emerged as Champions of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Expo 2026 Case Competition held last July 17 at the Natividad Fajardo-Rosario Gonzales Auditorium in De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila.

The Harvesync team, also composed of Sean William P. Avila III of DLSU and Kevin Carl L. Pascion of the University of the Philippines Diliman, earned a spot among the Top 3 Finalists before ultimately winning the competition. Their team developed a realistic and implementable proposal that leverages AI as a human-centered logistics support system to improve agricultural supply chain efficiency, accessibility, and operational decision-making within the Philippine context.

Organized by the Industrial Management Engineering Society, the AI Expo 2026 carried the theme “The Singularity Continuum,” exploring the continuous evolution of intelligence in a future where human judgment and AI coexist, adapt, and innovate beyond conventional technological boundaries. The case competition challenged participants to design AI-driven solutions for real-world agricultural logistics issues in the Philippines.

OBF UPDATE: James Rellera (BS ITE ‘26), founder of Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup Avilta, was chosen to join the eighth cohort of the Bronco Ventures Accelerator (BVA8), run by Santa Clara University, United States. BVA8 began on July 9, and will run until October 9.

Avilta is an AI operating system built to help e-commerce brands unify their store, ads, inventory, and fulfillment operations into one central company brain. Rellera previously presented Avilta in the IGNITE 2025 Startup World Cup Philippines Regional Final and placed in the Top 3.

Through his acceptance into BVA8, Rellera will receive mentorship, resources, and investor connections, including access to JECA's newly launched investment fund.

Rellera’s participation in BVA8 marks an early positive outcome from the Ateneo’s membership in the Jesuit Entrepreneurship Center Alliance (JECA), a global network of entrepreneurship centers from Jesuit universities that collaborate to expand student ventures. Notably, the Ateneo was granted eligibility to apply to BVA following its entry into JECA last November 2025.

BVA empowers entrepreneurs and their teams to grow for-profit businesses with competence, conscience, and compassion, giving founders equity-free access to mentors, workshops, and potential early investment from the Bronco Venture Fund.
