The Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (ALIWW) is an archival facility within the Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University. Founded in 1994, it focused initially on the literary output of Filipino women in both the vernacular and foreign languages. Since 1999, ALIWW has enlarged its scope to include writings by and about Filipino women in all areas, with emphasis on their contributions to
Filipino cultural life. The first of its kind in the Philippines, ALIWW provides a repository of Filipino cultures as created and recorded by the nation’s women. It hopes to become a regional research center for gender studies, promoting comparative studies and facilitating cross-cultural exchange among various women’s studies programs in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and in the rest of the world. ALIWW draws its vast range of materials from both public and private collections. These may be published (posters, playbills, invitations, programs, reviews) or unpublished materials (holographs, manuscripts, transcripts of interviews), or personal papers (diaries, letters) and photographs. A further source of materials is oral texts, derived from interviews with artists and writers and other women professionals. Materials donated to ALIWW are processed, catalogued, and classified by professional librarians and eventually preserved through microfiche or other electronic means. Among these are the private papers of writers Paz Marquez Benitez, Angela Manalang Gloria, Lina Flor, Rosario de Guzman Lingat, and Gilda Cordero Fernando, artists Leonor Orosa Goquingco, Araceli Dans, and Maningning Miclat, and social worker Mita Pardo de Tavera. ALIWW houses the Doreen G. Fernandez Collection, the memoirs of suffragist Encarnacion Alzona and comfort woman Maria Rosa Henson. ALIWW is located at the sprawling Loyola Heights campus of the Ateneo de Manila University. It is a special place where Filipino women’s writings are preserved and their accomplishments celebrated, inspiring younger generations of Filipino women. Kristine Michelle L. Santos, PhD
