Ang kanilang mga kuwento ay bahagi ng kasaysayang ating minana at patuloy na binubuo. Sa pag-alala sa kanilang mga ambag, nawa’y maalala rin natin na ang pagmamahal sa bayan ay naipapakita hindi lamang sa malalaking sakripisyo, kundi pati sa simpleng paraan ng paglilingkod at pagtulong sa ating komunidad.

𝑨𝑨𝑺𝑨 𝑬𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆 | 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 t𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐨

Some gifts stay with a person long after they are received. For Julian Alejandro C. Ardivilla, this gift took the form of an Ateneo education. Yet over time, what stayed with him was not simply the opportunity itself, but the people behind it. He is grateful to his mother who refused to let circumstances define her children’s future; to the benefactors who chose to invest in someone they had never met; and to the community who believed in him through every stage of his journey.

Raised by a single mother alongside two older siblings in Zambales, Ardi grew up understanding how opportunities rarely belong to one person alone. Every achievement carried someone else’s sacrifice. While his mother worked in business development and his siblings gradually entered the workforce as a content developer and a quality assurance tester, much of the family’s resources remained tied to the financial obligations and loans incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the entire family fell ill. Through it all, Ateneo remained possible because others stepped forward to help carry the burden.

For nearly a decade, scholarships from Ateneo carried Ardi through Junior High School, Senior High School, and College. Along the way, the Office of Admission and Aid (OAA), the Ateneo Alumni Scholars Association (AASA), and the countless benefactors became more than providers of financial assistance. They became reminders that sometimes the greatest act of faith is believing in someone before he even believes in himself.

When he approached the latter years of college, Ardi began stepping outside his comfort zone and preparing for life beyond Ateneo. What once felt distant suddenly became real. Career fairs, internship opportunities, and conversations about the future reminded him how graduation was no longer an abstract goal but an approaching reality. With each new experience came greater confidence—not only in his abilities but also in the purpose he wanted his life to serve.

Ardi hopes to pursue a career in law, building on his studies in Interdisciplinary Studies with tracks in Political Science and Psychology. He envisions using the law as a tool for advocacy, particularly for individuals and communities whose voices often go unheard. Whether through public service, policy work, or legal advocacy, he hopes to contribute to a fairer society and create meaningful change, even in small ways.

As he reflects on his Ateneo journey, Ardi leaves with a lesson he will carry long after graduation: that a scholarship is more than financial aid. It is an act of trust. And trust comes with a responsibility—to grow, to serve, and eventually, to become the person who also opens doors for someone else.

𝐉𝐏’𝐬 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐢t

John Paul G. Guevarra, known to many as JP, recently graduated as a scholar earning an AB Political Science degree. Raised in Pampanga, JP grew up with his parents and younger sibling by his side. His parents’ sacrifices and perseverance became his greatest source of inspiration. From an early age, he already understood how pursuing a college education at Ateneo—or at any prestigious university—would be impossible without external support. Despite his parents’ unwavering efforts to provide for their family, the realities of expensive tuition fees, school expenses, and daily transportation unfortunately remained difficult burdens to carry.

For JP, receiving confirmation of Ateneo’s 100% financial aid scholarship grant was indeed an answered prayer. It was the fulfillment of his parents’ silent hopes and his personal yearning to learn, grow, and become someone who could make a difference. As expected, the transition to college was not without its difficulties. For the longest time, JP was confronted with challenges in school where the environment seemed to create a silent competition among the brightest students.

The journey became even more difficult when JP failed a subject. He felt as though he had failed not only himself but also the Ateneo Alumni Scholars Association (AASA), Office of Admission and Aid (OAA), professors, and most painfully, his parents who had sacrificed so much for him. However, it was at this lowest point where he encountered the true essence of the scholar community—the OAA extended understanding going beyond mere financial assistance. Through their support, JP slowly found the strength to begin again. He learned how to better manage his time, seek help when needed, and take full responsibility for both his successes and failures.

Among the experiences JP is most proud of are those which allowed him to apply his education beyond the classroom. His internship with the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he served under the Economic Research and Training Department’s Market Professionals Development Division, gave him the opportunity to see Political Science in practice through national webinars, training modules, reports, and capacity-building initiatives. He also takes pride in helping manage his family’s floral business, Gayak Sampaga de San Simon, where he developed practical skills in customer service, coordination, marketing, and creativity.

Reflecting on his journey, JP shares: “I entered Ateneo unsure if I belonged here. Now, I leave understanding that I was never placed here only for myself.” Today, JP is more determined than ever to finish strong because these milestones are not his alone. They belong to his parents who work relentlessly; to his sibling who looks up to him; and to AASA and OAA, who recognized his worth even before he fully understood it himself.

JP hopes to become a public servant, carrying the role with deep humility and responsibility. He knows his duty is not only to succeed, but to also to give back. One day, he hopes to build the change he once prayed for as a young student carrying dreams bigger than his circumstances.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐑𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐢 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞’𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤

Khrystyl Jade “Rhyssi” Tudas, a recent graduate of BS Chemistry–Materials Science and Engineering, comes from a humble and hardworking family of five. They currently live in a small, storage-like room which they call home. Her mother is a full-time housewife, while her father is a delivery driver for a candle factory, earning a modest monthly income of ₱11,000 to ₱13,000 to support the entire family.

Born and raised in Davao City, Rhyssi’s journey to Ateneo began with sacrifice. Her family made the tough decision to leave Mindanao and relocate to Luzon, so she could attend face-to-face classes in Metro Manila. They initially stayed on factory grounds in Bulacan, where her father worked, squeezing into a small house which could barely accommodate all their family members. When the property was sold in 2023, they were forced to move to Valenzuela. Although being accepted into Ateneo with a full-ride financial aid scholarship motivated Rhyssi, it also brought the immense pressure of proving herself worthy of the opportunity, while her family struggled to make ends meet.

Throughout her time at Ateneo, Rhyssi faced financial challenges. Her family spent around ₱800 to ₱1,000 weekly on her brother’s transportation to school, while the rest stretched the family’s weekly budget of ₱2,000 for food, water, LPG, and mobile data. Meanwhile, whenever her allowance was delayed, Rhyssi frequently walked long distances from her dormitory to find affordable meals, sometimes living on nothing more than cup noodles and eggs, or even just rice with soy sauce. The weight of these day-to-day struggles affected Rhyssi’s mental health deeply, which led her to decline opportunities to join organizations and extracurricular activities.

On top of these challenges, she was diagnosed with Major Depression in late 2024, prompting her to take a Leave of Absence (LOA) to recover from the many hardships she had endured. Just as she was starting to heal, another setback struck her family. In early 2025, her father suffered a mild stroke due to hypertension, forcing him to stop working temporarily. As the family’s sole breadwinner, his illness made it even harder to afford maintenance medications, regular check-ups, and the dietary changes necessary for his recovery. Yet, Rhyssi chose to maximize her time away from school. During her LOA, she gradually rebuilt herself by exploring new interests in coding, textbook editing, video production, and public speaking while reconnecting with her long-standing passion for writing.

As she graduated with an Honorable Mention distinction, Rhyssi carries dreams for herself, her family, and those who have supported her. She plans to build a career in science and technology, whether through research, sustainable development, or education. At the same time, she hopes to continue growing in digital media, communication, and advocacy, using these platforms to raise awareness about issues close to her heart, particularly mental health and poverty. Above all, she dreams of paying forward the opportunities she has received by mentoring underprivileged students and supporting scholarship initiatives.

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐞𝐬, 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭; 𝐍𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭

For Jeslyn Joie N. Estalilla, studying AB Philosophy was never part of the plan. Growing up in Manila with her father, Charlie; her mother, Mikee; and her older sister, Jianah—who also studied in Ateneo through a scholarship —Jes had always imagined a very different future for herself.

Like many families, theirs was deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which left her mother unemployed. They struggled to make ends meet while paying off rent arrears, making every financial decision carefully considered. It was only in 2022 when her father accepted a full-time job offered by a church friend that Jes’ family slowly found their footing.

A consistent honor student and active student leader in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand, Jes had always dreamed of pursuing medicine at Ateneo, but fulfilling this dream would only be possible if she received a full-ride scholarship like her older sister, Jianah. She applied to competitive pre-med programs, hoping to study BS Health Sciences, but life seemed to have other plans. She was waitlisted for BS Biology at the University of the Philippines, and although she received an offer from Ateneo, it was not for the program she had worked so hard toward. Instead, she was admitted to pursue AB Philosophy.

At first, Jes thought it was a “system error,” or perhaps, as she jokingly puts it, “karma” for paying little attention during her high school Philosophy classes. The disbelief soon turned into self-doubt, especially when she was not granted a 100% financial aid scholarship initially. Encouraged by her father’s reminder that “God will always provide,” Jes persevered and stayed in AB Philosophy. She also appealed for financial aid and was eventually granted a full-ride scholarship through the support of the Office of Admission and Aid and the Ateneo Alumni Scholars Association.

Somewhere along the way, Philosophy stopped feeling like a mistake. What once felt like an unexpected detour gradually became the discipline in which she found purpose and excelled, eventually graduating with an Honorable Mention distinction. Today, Jes dreams less of prestige and more of stability, purpose, and service. While many of her friends have prepared for law school, her aspiration is to work in the development sector so she can help support her family and ease the burden carried by her father.

Over time, Jes has definitely learned to embrace ambiguity. In many ways, philosophy taught her to always find meaning even in uncertainty itself: “What I can attest to—and the greatest lesson philosophy has taught me—is that the greatest insights are born from uncertainty,” she says.

Today, we remember Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and the ultimate sacrifice he made for the Filipino people. 🇵🇭

On August 21, 1983, Ninoy was assassinated upon his return to the Philippines after years in exile. His tragic death became a turning point in our country’s history, which eventually awakened a growing movement against the Marcos dictatorship and contributed to the restoration of democracy through the 1986 People Power Revolution.

More than four decades later, we continue to remember his deep love for our country, his courage, and his unwavering belief in the Filipino people. May his life remind us of the importance of speaking up, standing for what is right, and protecting our freedoms and the democracy we value.

𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒓𝒂𝒘 𝒏𝒈 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒛𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒚!

Today, we celebrate Quezon City and the history it has built over the years. Founded in 1939, Quezon City served as the capital of the Philippines from 1948 to 1976 and has since grown into a center for education, government, and culture.

More than its history, Quezon City is shaped by the people and communities who continue to call it home. As we celebrate its founding, may we pray for our leaders and also recognize their continued role in creating spaces for learning, service, and growth.
