ADMU Theology Department

ADMU Theology Department This is the page of the Department of Theology of the Higher Education Cluster of the Ateneo de Manila University.

Theology, an integral part of Jesuit Education, with its living intellectual and moral/spiritual tradition and its truly Catholic/Christian orientation, aims to foster the total formation of Ateneo students. While the Catholic and Jesuit education permeates the whole University, the specific task of theology is to bring this tradition into an explicit, systematic and critical study in our Filipino

context. This involves a serious effort at creating, articulating and exercising a critically grounded, inculturated program that engages the intra-inter and metapersonal contexts of today’s Ateneo students leading towards a transformation of consciousness translated in a committed Christian/Catholic faith life. As a constitutive part of the humanistic program, Theology infuses the academic formation of students with a firmly articulated Catholic/Christian vision.

INTERDISCIPLINARY ELECTIVE for Intersession 2026-27

Theo 114.03i "Let the Little Children Come to Me": Teaching Catechism to Urban Poor Children

Raphael Augustine L. Yabut, Ph.D.
Section O: T 3:00-6:30pm & F 4:00-8:00pm K-304
*FULLY ONSITE with community engagement on Fridays

This service-learning course is an introduction to teaching the catechism to children in urban poor communities. Methods and concepts from developmental psychology, child education, and theology are used to discuss the practice of teaching the faith. The primary goal of the course is for students to explain the key pedagogical, psychological and catechetical concepts and apply these in designing and implementing a catechetical ground plan. Students will learn by doing – as the course progresses, students will be given opportunities to construct the ground plan. The course draws inspiration from “Let the little children come to me…” (Matthew 9:14).

This Palm Sunday, we’re invited to see disruption not as despair, but as a call for courage and discernment in the midst of uncertainty. As your teachers in DLQ 10 (Discerning Life Questions), we offer these points to invite you to reflect with us in noticing where the Spirit
might be guiding us. The disruptions we face are not only challenges but also opportunities—opportunities to practice courage, to act in ways that reflect our deepest values, and to contribute to the common good rather than simply reacting from our immediate anxieties and fear.

Pope Leo XIV has issued a new Apostolic Letter, In Unitate Fidei, inviting the Church to renew her enthusiasm for the profession of faith, especially the profound confession of faith in Jesus Christ. He reminds us that this confession is not merely a doctrine to recite but a living truth that shapes our unity and our mission (par. 9 and 12).

In this spirit, we invite you to the 17th National Conference for Religious Educators on February 21–22, 2026, with the theme: “Iisang Panginoon: Catechesis and Religious Education through Creed and Culture.”

Together, let us reflect on how the Nicene affirmation of Jesus as one Lord can be taught, lived, and inculturated in the Filipino context today.

Conference Fees:

* Early-Bird Rate: ₱3,600.00 (if paid and registered on or before December 12, 2025)
* Regular Fee: ₱3,800.00 (from December 13, 2025 to January 16, 2026; subject to slot availability)

How do we express our faith in Jesus through the richness of our culture and daily life? How does our culture, in turn, help us deepen that faith? How can we teach this faith meaningfully in our classrooms?

Let’s explore these vital questions together at the 17th National Conference for Religious Educators (NCRE) with the theme “Iisang Panginoon: Catechesis and Religious Education through Creed and Culture”

When: February 21–22, 2026
Where: Ateneo de Manila University

Good news for professional teachers and catechists! The conference has applied for CPD accreditation, allowing licensed teachers to earn CPD units while deepening their formation in faith and pedagogy.

Let’s celebrate faith, learning, and communion in the One Lord Jesus Christ. Join us at the 17th NCRE where Creed meets Culture, and Education becomes Evangelization!
