When Life Gives You Tangerines—you go to Jeju Island?!

Jeju Island, lovingly nicknamed as the “Hawaii of South Korea”, is home to many pop culture moments: from being the filming location for many beloved K-dramas—such as Welcome to Samdal-ri, Warm and Cozy, and When Life Gives You Tangerines—to being the hometown of many beloved Korean celebrities like SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan and Red Velvet’s Joy. But beyond the pop culture scene, Jeju Island is known for its breathtaking beaches, rolling mountains, and tangerine orchards—truly a southern island worthy of its praise.

The island is situated in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and covers a lava plateau with a shield volcano at an elevation above sea level. It is Korea’s largest island and one of its most popular holiday and honeymoon destinations.

Between its volcanic landscapes, dramatic coastlines, deep-rooted traditions, and warm local identity, Jeju Island offers something different from inland South Korea—creating a destination that is as powerful as it is peaceful. With such a reputation, it is no surprise that many consider the island as healing.

여러분, for this summer’s healing, what will your Jeju be? Or perhaps, will you visit the southern island itself with your very eyes?

Let’s share our answers below and heal well until the next Tuesdays I Learn! 💚

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚... 😫❤️‍🔥

Last March 4, 2026, UP Arirang members were invited to watch as the country's top K-pop cover groups battle it the house down boots at Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in the Philippines' 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐊𝐏𝐎𝐏: 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 at the Metropolitan Theater, Manila 🤩🌟

Not only were we able to witness the amazing stages of groups Paradigm, ALPHA, Meraki, and WildKard, we were also graced by the presence of Kim Hye Kyung, the Republic of Korea's first lady, Lia Kim, the legendary South Korean choreographer from 1Million Dance Studio, Gwyn Dorado, a Filipino singer-songwriter based in South Korea, and so many more talented artists! 🔥

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in the Philippines for, once again, letting us be a part of another fun-filled K-event! 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️

Our Ari-babies definitely had a blast with this one 🥺

Observed annually on May 5th, Children’s Day or “Eorininal” (어린이날) is a significant national holiday in South Korea dedicated to honoring the happiness, dignity, and fundamental rights of children.

Esteemed children’s book author and activist Bang Jeong-hwan established this event in 1923, founded on the principle that children should be nurtured with respect and treated as independent individuals. Today, the day remains a vital reminder of the Children’s Charter, advocating for a childhood free from discrimination.

While originally observed on May 1st, the holiday was moved to May 5th in 1946 to avoid overlapping with Labor Day, sharing the date with Japan. It officially became a national holiday in the 1970s, ensuring that parents and children alike have the day off to celebrate as an opportunity for precious family bonding. Meanwhile, other nations observe the day at different times, such as the second Sunday of June in the United States or October 12th in Brazil.

Since then, it kicks off a summer season of family-centric observances, where families typically engage in various outdoor activities. However, beyond the festivities and gifts, this honored national celebration serves as a vital commitment to fostering a society where every child can grow in a safe and joyful environment.

Sahod, trabaho, at karapatan—ipaglaban!

Every first of May, we honor all hardworking Filipinos—from factory workers and teachers to tsupers and healthcare workers—and remember their sacrifices and efforts to be the backbone of our nation’s progress.

The first Labor Day happened in 1903—123 years ago to this day. More than 100,000 workers had marched to Malacañang to demand fair wages and better working conditions. Led by the Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas, this marked the beginning of organized labor activism in the country and helped shape the rights Filipino workers enjoy today.

But the fight continues on. With the ongoing oil crisis and injustices endured by our workers, let us celebrate this Labor Day by honoring the efforts of every Filipino worker and remembering our continuing responsibility to champion their rights—better wages, humane treatment, full-time job opportunities, and safe working conditions for all!

Saludo kami sa inyo, mga bayani ng makabagong panahon!
