Integrated epidemic and stock-flow consistent modelling for exploring the role of demand-side factors in epidemic scenarios

Abstract:
Epidemics, pandemics, and interventions taken to abate them all have potential impacts on economic activities. Changes in economic activity likewise impact onward transmission. Integrated epidemiological-economic models aim to capture the interrelationships and interdependencies between epidemics and economies. We develop a simple integrated model consisting of a deterministic compartmental epidemiological model and a stock-flow consistent economic model. We demonstrate parametrisation using the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines as an example, and explore the epidemiological-economic landscape induced by different possible behavioural functions linking the two models. We show how the model captures a spontaneous change in consumption impacting economic variables and at the same time changing the course of the outbreak, such that new infections are reduced and epidemic's peak is delayed.
