Together with FriendlyCare Foundation and UP Center for Women's Studies Foundation Inc. (UPCWSFI), UP Center for Women's and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) held another Free Birth Control Implant and Removal, and Breast Examination Initiative last September 4. Of the 70 confirmed registrants and walk-ins, 49 clients received a clinical breast exam, while 43 clients underwent implant procedures.

Initiatives like this help make essential reproductive health services more accessible, especially for those who may face barriers to accessing care. We are grateful to our partners and everyone who made this possible. 💜

Together, we continue to support informed choices, bodily autonomy, and access to essential health services.

UPCWGS’ Bryon Senga was part of TRANScript: Naming Transfemicide, Writing Justice Into Policy | Part 2: The Dialogue, organized by the Society of Trans Women of the Philippines Inc. (STRAP).

Held on September 1, 2026 at the UP Diliman College of Social Work and Community Development, the dialogue identified gaps and explored what government can do to address transfemicide and anti-trans violence.

As STRAP reminds us, “Beyond naming transfemicide is the work of listening, understanding, and turning conversations into action.”

September 21 | Day of Remembrance

September 21 is a Day of Remembrance at the University of the Philippines, commemorating the university community’s experiences during Martial Law and honoring those who stood against repression.

In its commemorative article, UP also recognizes the contributions of activists from the university, including Judy M. Taguiwalo, who served as Director of the UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies from 2014 to 2015.

Taguiwalo is recognized for her long-standing work in advancing women’s rights and social justice, as well as her resistance to corruption and repression. Her history reminds us that the struggle for gender equality is also connected to the broader fight for freedom, democracy, and human rights.

On this Day of Remembrance, we remember the past and continue learning from their struggles.

Voices from Mindanao: An Undergraduate Intern’s Experience at UPCWGS

We are proud to feature Samuel Harry Adlaon of Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), our first undergraduate intern from Mindanao! 💜

Samuel shares his experience and gives a review of his internship at the UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS).

Samuel said, "My experience at the center has highlighted the significant work remaining to achieve a truly inclusive society. It prompted me to reflect on the current situation in my community and the disparities compared to the progress I have observed here. Furthermore, I am so thankful that the center provided me with opportunities, networks, and resources that would have been inaccessible otherwise. These experiences, trainings, and network will be instrumental in my future projects advocating for gender mainstreaming and gender-inclusive practices.

The center has inspired me to become a bridge for progress—not by erasing Mindanao's unique cultural diversity, but by championing inclusive practices tailored to a localized context—especially in MSU-IIT."

The University of the Philippines-Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders had a three-day training seminar, called Oh, May GAD! Pagsulong ng SDG 5 sa Ating mga Komunidad. It was held on July 28 at the Commission on Human Rights Complex, UP Diliman. One of the resource speakers was UPCWGS Director Marie Aubrey Villaceran. The aim of the event was to build the capacity of local government units in the National Capital Region in their pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal No. 5 (Gender Equality and Empowering Women and Girls).

Building gender-equal communities starts with strengthening the capacity of those closest to the people. Through knowledge-sharing, LGUs can turn gender equality commitments into concrete policies, programs, and services.
