Majella Tumangan-Villaroman | MCHS 1979

ALUMNI IN THE SPOTLIGHT | Majella Tumangan-Villaroman once thought she would become a nun during her time at Miriam College High School, Batch 1979. Little did she know that the care and compassion she possessed would instead lead her to influence the global wellness industry.

Today, she is the President and CEO of my-CORD Corporation, a premier international provider of employee assistance programs and services for multinational clients. In 2018, she was recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the World by the Foundation for Filipina Women’s Network.

LOOK | As part of our school’s landmark 100th-anniversary celebration, the Miriam College Grade School faculty and staff visited the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Standing before the historic treasure of Juan Luna’s Spoliarium, we are reminded of our core mission as educators. For a century, our institution has dedicated itself to molding young minds, fostering critical thought, and preserving our cultural narrative. Luna's masterpiece reminds us that art and education are parallel forces—both capable of awakening a nation and sustaining its legacy.

Ma. Amparo “Itto” Agrava, MD | MCHS 1983

ALUMNI IN THE SPOTLIGHT | Dr. Ma. Amparo ‘Itto’ Agrava’s aspiration to become a physician began with a deeply personal realization: there was no health advocate within her family of lawyers. Today, she brings the same incomparable empathy as Head of the Child Neuroscience Division at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, making a meaningful difference in the lives of countless Filipino children and their families.

In her leadership role, Dr. Agrava oversees several subspecialties, including child neurology, neurodevelopmental pediatrics, and child and adolescent psychiatry. With Dr. Itto’s wealth of expertise, she also passionately mentors the future generation of healthcare practitioners as part-time faculty at her alma mater Far Eastern University-Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation’s College of Medicine.

As Miriam College celebrates 100 years this year, it also marks 37 years since the transition from Maryknoll to Miriam. The change was not simply about a new name, but about answering a deeper call to mission, service, and growth.

The article revisits the journey of the Maryknoll Sisters, the transfer of the school to lay leadership, and the community’s eventual embrace of a name that honored both Mother Mary and Sr. Miriam Thomas Thornton. It is a story of courage, adaptability, and a legacy that continues to shape generations of Knollers today.
