How do we deepen our connection with our farmers?

By taking the time to know them better through meaningful conversations, listening to their stories, and understanding not only what they grow, but also why they choose to grow it.

Blue Harvest: Farmers Market #1 was a meaningful and successful gathering held on September 28, 2026, at the Gonzaga Foyer.

We spent the day alongside the farmers of Mariwska Integrated Farm in Antipolo, supporting them as they shared and sold their freshly harvested produce. Beyond simply bringing farm fresh goods to our community, the market gave us an opportunity to connect with the people behind the harvest! To hear their stories, appreciate their work, and better understand the care and purpose that go into every crop they grow.

Because when we know our farmers, we donโ€™t just know where our food comes from. We become more connected to the people, stories, and hard work behind every harvest.

Thankful for this collaboration with the Office for Social Concern and Involvement.

The Department of Economics warmly congratulates Dr. Maire Carroline T. Magante, Department Chair, on receiving the Ricardo Leong Grant for Global Area Studies Research, SY 2026โ€“2027, for her study, โ€œClimate Shocks and Internal Migration: Evidence from Typhoon Exposure in the Philippines.โ€ This milestone also marks Dr. Magante as the first Leong Institute Fellow from the Department of Economics.

The study is undertaken in partnership with Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), where Dr. Magante serves as an External Partner under the TEMPEST project.

The Department also joins the Ateneo community in congratulating all recipients of this yearโ€™s Ricardo Leong Grants and all Leong Institute Fellows. We celebrate the diverse research contributions represented by this yearโ€™s cohort and the opportunities these projects create for deeper global and area studies scholarship.

What factors are associated with labor and export productivity among semiconductor firms in the Philippines?

A new study by Ateneo Economics lecturer Gerald Pascua examined the performance and productivity of the Philippine semiconductor industry using nationally representative firm-level data. The findings show that semiconductor establishments exhibit higher labor and export productivity, while highlighting the importance of R&D investment and the impact of utility costs.

A 1% increase in R&D expenditure is associated with approximately 0.23% higher labor productivity and 0.19% higher export productivity. Each additional R&D personnel is associated with approximately 0.2% higher labor productivity. In contrast, higher utility expenditure shares are associated with lower productivity. A one-percentage-point increase in the electricity expenditure share is associated with approximately 5.6% lower labor productivity and 20.1% lower export productivity. For water, the corresponding figures are 1.9% and 5.9%, respectively. Based on these findings, the study proposes a sequenced approach to industry upgrading, recognizing that productivity growth is a gradual and cumulative process and that interventions should be calibrated to firmsโ€™ capabilities and stages of development.

On 26 August 2026, the Department of Economics of the Ateneo de Manila University welcomed a delegation from the Mindanao State Universityโ€“Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) for an academic benchmarking visit focused on curriculum development, quality assurance, and departmental best practices.

The MSU-IIT delegation was composed of Martha Joy Abing, Chair of the Department of Economics; Gerrich Aldin Babanto, Faculty Member, Department Curriculum Coordinator for the BSBA Business Economics program, and Junior Economic Society Adviser; Lady Lou Dโ€™Lonsod, Faculty Member and Department Curriculum Coordinator for the BS Economics program; and Charlyn Capulong, Faculty Member and College Extension Coordinator.

The benchmarking sessions were hosted by Dr. Maire Carroline T. Magante, Chair, and Mr. Genesis Kelly Lontoc, Associate Chair of the Ateneo Department of Economics. The sessions provided an opportunity to share the Departmentโ€™s experiences and practices in curriculum management, academic administration, student outcomes assessment, and quality assurance processes.

The Department is honored to contribute to MSU-IITโ€™s curriculum enhancement initiatives and preparations for AUN-QA accreditation. The visit also provided a valuable opportunity for mutual learning and institutional exchange, and we look forward to continued collaboration in advancing excellence in economics education.

As pressure mounts on the agricultural sector due to the economic impact of the oil crisis, rising input costs, and recent flooding, Ms. Genevieve Iรฑumerable shares her expertise on how students can stand in solidarity with Filipino farmers.

Through the first Blue Harvest: Agriculture Talk of the semester, we gained insight into the current state of Filipino farmers and explored the many ways students can participate, support, and learn more about the economics of agricultural systems and the people who strengthen them.
