As pressure mounts on the agricultural sector due to the economic impact of the oil crisis, rising input costs, and recent flooding, Ms. Genevieve Iรฑumerable shares her expertise on how students can stand in solidarity with Filipino farmers.

Through the first Blue Harvest: Agriculture Talk of the semester, we gained insight into the current state of Filipino farmers and explored the many ways students can participate, support, and learn more about the economics of agricultural systems and the people who strengthen them.

Watch out for more Blue Harvest projects this school year!

Too Hot to Work? Exploring the Average and Seasonal Effects of Temperature Variability in the Philippine Labour Market

A new study co-authored by Paolo R. Magnata (PhD Candidate, TU Delft & Ateneo Economics MA alumnus) and Dr. Maire Carroline T. Magante (Chairperson, Ateneo Department of Economics) examines how temperature changes impact employment growth across 16 regions in the Philippines.

Using data from Q3 2003 to Q1 2022, the study reveals that while average effects are minimal, seasonal impacts vary significantly. During the dry and hot season (Q2), higher temperatures are associated with a persistent 0.1361% decrease in employment growth. Conversely, in the wet and hot season (Q3), higher temperatures correspond to a persistent 0.1450% increase in employment growth, largely driven by the services sector.

The findings indicate that Philippine labor market responses are primarily shaped by macro-level, large-scale climatic fluctuations rather than short-term local weather variations.

Ateneo Economics lecturer and Philippines Technology Policy (PTP) fellow Gerald Pascua, together with the other PTP fellows, paid a courtesy visit to the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC, USA. The cohort was received by Deputy Chief of Mission Felipe F. Cariรฑo III and Economic Minister and Consul Hans Mohaimin L. Siriban.

During the visit, the fellows shared an overview of their respective research and exchanged views on how their fellowship work could contribute to the countryโ€™s semiconductor industry development, strategic trade relations, and investment priorities. The discussion also highlighted the role of Philippine diplomatic missions in fostering international partnerships, strengthening engagement with industry and other stakeholders, and advancing the countryโ€™s economic interests abroad.

The Department of Economics warmly congratulates its lecturer, ๐Œ๐ซ. ๐†๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ ๐†๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐š๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐š, on his selection as a part of ...

The nine-month program supports fellows in conducting independent, policy-oriented research on semiconductor issues, with the goal of informing Philippine strategic trade cooperation and policy development in the sector. The program culminates in a study visit abroad that provides opportunities to engage with key stakeholders, mentors, and industry experts, while fostering professional and collaborative networks in semiconductor technology and policy.

Mr. Pascuaโ€™s fellowship research examines the drivers of productivity and export performance in the Philippine semiconductor industry using firm-level national survey data. The study aims to inform policy recommendations that support the industryโ€™s continued growth and competitiveness through targeted industrial support and stronger collaboration among industry, research institutions, and academe.
