Titled "𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝," the lecture problematizes Japan’s peace literature, using the story of 15-year-old naval radio operator Nakamura Masao, and argues that its focus on Japanese suffering can obscure the experiences of Filipinos under Japanese Occupation. It critiques this “victimhood nationalism” and calls for more multidimensional and reflexive memories of war that recognize both Japanese and Filipino experiences.
