The Source of All

Look around…

Everything’s been masterfully designed: The skies, the trees, the mountains, the oceans. The animals, the people, the seen, and the unseen.

You can breathe because you've been given lungs, oxygen, and an environment that sustains life. You can move because you've been given muscles, tendons, and a brain that instructs your body. You can think, dream, plan, design, create, build—because you've been given the desire, ability, and some raw materials.

So if you want to live a life that matters, a life that leaves an eternal legacy, you must stay connected to the source of life. Jesus said it like this, using an illustration that was familiar to His listeners:

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”
‭‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When Jesus says, “I am the vine,” He’s making a statement. He’s saying that He is the source—that anything that’s made is because of His life-giving power.

So if you long for real truth, for genuine wisdom, or to make a lasting difference in this world, stick close to God—because anything worth being or doing starts with Him.

Let us all pray…

God, apart from You I can do nothing. Forgive me when I try to go it alone. I need You every day. I need Your wisdom and guidance in my life. Strengthen my spiritual habits. Help me remain in You, and prune any unrighteous fruit I may bear. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Holy Saturday is a day of mourning, but not a day without hope. Jesus' day in the tomb reminds us that we will all know death. We will watch the death of our loved ones. Eventually, we will all fall asleep one last time. But Holy Saturday is good news because Jesus announces that death is never more than a nap. In Jesus, death is a day of rest before the dawn of a new creation and a much needed break before a new era of renewed and resurrection life.

Prayer:
God, I praise You for Your everlasting love. Sometimes life is hard and all I see is darkness and death. But You are there with an enduring promise and plan. Satisfy my soul and give me rest. I know You are faithful and have already won the battle through Your death and resurrection. Thank You, Father!

Good Friday is good news because Jesus' death announces that there is forgiveness for all sins. His blood pulls back the curtain of God's mercy and now all people can be forgiven and saved from a death that would otherwise be deserved.

Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for becoming “God with us.” Thank You for taking the brokenness of the world off of our shoulders. It’s because of Your selfless sacrifice that I can now experience eternal life with You. Today, I receive Your free gift of salvation, and I invite You to heal me. I want to spend the rest of my life becoming more like You. Amen.

A Firm Foundation

We inhabit this beautiful-yet-broken world, so experiencing various levels of suffering is inevitable. Thankfully, for the follower of Jesus, it’s also temporary.

Peter—a disciple, apostle, and close friend of Jesus—wrote this:

“In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Right before he wrote these words, Peter reminds God’s people that they’re not the only ones suffering. In fact, there are believers all over the world facing trials and hardships because of their faith in Christ.

“In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus…”

Because He lived the perfect life we couldn’t, died the brutal death we should have, and rose again so that we might be with Him forever, Jesus is able to invite us to share in His eternal glory. A glory that goes on forever and is humanly impossible for us to fully understand.

“So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you…”

For those who are in Christ, heartbreak is temporary, suffering is fleeting, and even death is short-term. Eventually, God is going to wipe away every tear once and for all, doing away with pain and sadness and crying—forever. God is going to make all things new (Revelation 21:4-5).

“…and he will place you on a firm foundation.”

That firm foundation was established before the beginning of time. It’s a good foundation, a true foundation, and a firm foundation. There is no other foundation that’s more worthy of our trust.

So whatever you’re currently walking through—no matter how hard, horrible, or absolutely heartbreaking—you can cling to this future reality. While suffering is unavoidable, you can know that its days are numbered.

Let us pray…

God, thank You for being the God of all grace. You sent Your Son so that I can experience eternity with You. Your Word says that You will restore me and make me strong. Please make me willing to allow Your Spirit to transform my life. And as You do that, please continue to give me hope that my suffering won’t last forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

True Beauty

In God's infinite wisdom and creativity. He has crafted magnificent things: watercolor sunsets, awe- inspiring mountains, turquoise oceans, and beautiful people.

Toward the climax of the poem, the author writes:

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting: but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." - Proverbs 31:30 NIV

Deep down we know this to be true, don't we?

No matter how charming or beautiful a woman is, we know that beauty is fleeting. We know that charm will not last. We know that the aging process will eventually run its course.

But there's barely any mention of this woman's physical beauty, instead, the focus is on her character on this woman who fears the Lord.

An earlier Proverb explains that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10)-the humble realization that anything good and wise and pure and true must have come from Him.

So if you know a woman like that-one who loves
and respects God, one who honors and cares for people, one who invests wisely and lives purposefully you might take a moment to thank God for her life. You might even consider how you can be more like her as she aims to be more like Him.

Not Forsaken

Lust. Adultery. A cover-up. A murder.

Those are the big mistakes that King David is bringing to God in Psalm 51—a psalm that walks through various steps of repentance and restoration after failing to follow God’s standards for living rightly.

The first part of verse 11 is a prayer for God not to abandon David because of his failure. David knows that the consequences for sin are serious. His plea to God indicates that he has a repentant spirit that is remorseful and willing to follow God.

Next, he asks for God to restore the joy of his salvation to him. He remembers a time where he had joy and passion as he followed God. But in this season of life, he has become disconnected from that joy.

And lastly, he asks for God to instill within him a spirit that is willing to follow and listen to God. David knows that an obedient life comes through the grace and power of God, and it’s God’s power that will sustain him.

There is much to learn about repentance from this psalm, and how to approach God when we mess up. But, we can be assured that when we mess up, God will not forsake us—just as He did not forsake David. He promises not to remove His presence from us. There is nothing that can take away the love of God from our life.

Because our salvation is secure in Christ forever and always, we can truly experience the joy that He makes possible. We may go through seasons where we don’t feel joyful—but that doesn’t change our status before God.

If you’ve made mistakes recently, spend some time confessing them to God right now. Ask God for forgiveness, and tell Him how you honestly feel today. Then, ask God for the power to live a new life that follows the paths He has for you. And as you pray this, remember that He will always love you. Nothing can separate you from Him.

Prayer:

God, please forgive me of my wrongdoings and selfish ways. I mess up time and time again; yet, You still love me! Thank You for Your constant presence and undeserved grace. Create in me a clean heart and willingness to be obedient to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

What is the goal of discipleship?

A roadmap is a really helpful tool. A GPS app on a smartphone is even better. Instead of unfolding a massive piece of paper and having to pull over on the side of the road to double-check that you’re on the right track, Siri can just tell you exactly when you need to turn and how long until you get to your destination. Siri is useful for telling you how to get somewhere, but it can’t tell you why you’re going. It doesn’t know if you’re going to a funeral to mourn or a birthday party to celebrate, to church to worship or to a ball game to root on your favorite team.

Like a GPS app, so many of the programs we do as Christians are meant to be a guide for us, telling us how to get somewhere. But I’m afraid too few of us stop to ask the why question.
The why behind every other question of discipleship is God. Why does discipleship matter? Because God matters. Nothing is more beautiful, lovely, pure, and limitless than God alone.

I believe each of us has a great opportunity: to recapture a radically God-centered vision for discipleship. The source of true discipleship is God himself. The goal of true discipleship is God himself. Fellowship with the Triune God is where we are going, and fellowship with the Triune God is how we are going to get there.

Prayer:

Jesus, You gave us the command to love others. At times, this is easier said than done. Please work within our hearts to transform our character so that our love begins to look more and more like Yours. Amen.
