The Department of Art Studies congratulates DAS faculty members Dr. Cecilia S. De La Paz, Dr. Roselle V. Pineda, Prof. Ma. Cecilia C. Dela Rosa, and Prof. Mark Louie L. Lugue for their appointment as UP Artists during the UP Arts Productivity System Awards Ceremony held on 15 August 2026 at Atencio-Libunao Hall, UP Diliman.

Our faculty members were awarded across different artistic disciplines such as theatre arts literature, visual arts, and TV/radio/digital media. The award recognizes them for their outstanding productivity in the creative arts and arts scholarship.

The making of a catalogue raisonné is often fraught with art historical problems. In this talk, Dr. Marilyn R. Canta will share some issues she encountered while attempting one such catalogue for Simon Flores, an artist of the 19th century. The artist is said to have produced only some 50 works throughout his career of about 40 years. While originally conceived historically for the art market, Dr. Canta believes that catalogues raisonnés can be used to further scholarly investigations into art and heritage, especially for artists and periods which have been neglected as areas of study. In this project, Dr. Canta shares the necessity of doing the sometimes difficult but necessary spadework associated with art historical methods, such as biography, connoisseurship, iconography, and social history.

Dr. Marilyn R. Canta (Ret.), is currently a Professorial Lecturer in the DAS, CAL and the Dept of Art Theory, CFA, both at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Her master’s thesis was on the Spanish colonial churches of Camarines Sur, while her doctoral dissertation was on Indo-Philippine textile convergences. In 2019, Dr. Canta spearheaded the Department of Art Studies’s extension work on an initial inventory of movable property in the Santiago Apostol parish in Betis, Guagua, Pampanga, which led to publication of a catalogue, Faces of Faith, in time for the town’s 450th anniversary in 2022. Her interest in a catalogue raisonné for Simon Flores began here.

STATEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ART STUDIES ON CHED'S "REFRAMED GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM COMPONENT"

The Faculty of the Department of Art Studies, UP Diliman, strongly opposes CHED’s “Reframed General Education Curriculum Component” (RGECC) which proposes to reduce the GE curriculum from 36 to 18 units. This is just the latest of several attacks on liberal humanist education and General Education, in particular.

“Liberal humanist” education parsed is education for free human beings to cultivate their maximum potential. With its wide variety of subjects forming the core of higher learning, General Education aims to produce well-rounded individuals equipped with knowledge and principles that will serve them well in whatever walk of life they find themselves after graduation. From General Education, we learn about the hopes and dreams of those who came before us, enabling us to hope and dream in turn and, most importantly, to live as fully sentient beings capable of critical thinking and creating a world that we would be proud to pass on to future generations.

The Arts and Humanities open to us the limitless possibilities of imagination and human creativity. We look back on artists and writers whose works which, while expressive of worldviews at historical moments that may seem far removed from us in time and space, do continue to resonate with us in the present. All peoples create art as an integral part of their culture; it is woven into our social fabric. Ultimately, the Arts and Humanities expand our vision beyond our short stay on earth.

We live in a world in the midst of oppression, wars, inequality, and social injustice. Art speaks of the human condition, even its unspeakable aspects, and it is now, more than ever, that we need our humanity.

With its emphasis on quantifiable outcomes and competencies, the RGECC does away with Arts and Humanities. What is to be gained by an impoverished imagination? Who benefits from depriving the youth of a liberal humanist education? Clearly, the proposed 18 units of General Education reveals a cynical view of institutions of learning as mere factories for the mass-production of docile bodies incapable of seeing beyond the daily grind. The youth, our future, are lured with the false promise of employability in soul-crushing jobs after graduation. With malnourished minds, they are trained only to be sacrificed at the altar of profit. The alignment of education policies to serve business interests is neoliberalism at its most brazen and mercenary.

The Philippine Educational System faces many ailments that, by now, seem endemic. The shortage of classrooms and sub-optimal student-teacher ratio has plagued us for decades. Alarmingly, the 2024 Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) has revealed that around 18 million high school graduates are not functionally literate. As if that were not enough, those lucky enough to enter college are now threatened with further deprivation. With the proposed 3-year College curriculum and the truncated 18-unit GE, the stunted development of our youth is ensured, leaving them with few options in a bleak job market. What hope is there for a people whose intellectual and spiritual resources are rendered scant to non-existent by shortsighted policies?
