Dulaang UP and its role in Philippine (National) Theatre: How has DUP contributed to the development of Philippine theatre?
National Artist for Literature Nicanor G. Tiongson is a Filipino scholar, playwright, and critic known for his contributions to Philippine theater, film, and literature. He is Professor Emeritus at the UP College of Mass Communication, where he served as dean from 2003 to 2006. He served as artistic director and vice president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines from 1986 to 1994 and was editor-in-chief of the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art. His scholarship examines traditional Filipino theater forms, including the komedya, sarsuwela, and sinakulo, recently publishing a three-volume collection on Philippine theater history, traditions, and aesthetics. He was conferred National Artist for Literature in 2026.

The University as Theatre: What does it mean to engage and make theatre within a university?
Jerry Respeto is an award-winning educator, translator, and author. He holds an MA and a PhD in Filipino literature from UP Diliman and teaches Filipino literature and drama at Ateneo de Manila University. He has chaired the Department of Filipino, directed the Fine Arts Program, and served as moderator and director of Ateneo Entablado. He is currently the artistic director of Areté and chair of CHED’s Performing Arts Technical Committee. He has translated numerous plays for Dulaang UP.
