Gambling holds deep traditional roots in the Philippines, but as the industry rapidly expands into electronic games, online platforms, and massive integrated resorts, do our regulatory protections measure up?

We are pleased to feature the journal article "When Gambling Tradition Is Old, but the Regulations Are Still Raw: Revisiting the Responsible Gambling Code of the Philippines for Better Consumer Consumption and Protection" published in the Philippine Journal of Public Policy (PJPP). Authored by Jovanie A. Tuguinay, this study evaluates the readiness and implementation of the Responsible Gaming: Code of Practice through a comparative text analysis across multiple versions, exploring the complex balance between state revenue generation, consumer protection, and social sustainability.

🏛️ WALLS OR BRIDGES? | Rethinking University Lands and Spatial Justice 🏙️🌿

How can state universities balance institutional land asset mandates with the human rights and housing security of long-standing campus communities?

An ongoing collaborative study led by joint research teams from UP Diliman and UP Visayas re-examines university land governance through the lens of spatial justice, seeking pathways to move past the rigid, administrative divides that separate campus management from local city planning. Led by Prof. Redento B. Recio, PhD, alongside researchers Prof. Rhodella A. Ibabao, Prof. Brian Ventura, and Ms. Maricar Gebucion, they recently held a roundtable convening representatives from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD VI), the Iloilo City Planning and Development Office, the Iloilo City Local Housing Office, and the Homeless People's Federation of the Philippines.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

Are the Sustainable Development Goals actually reaching the Western Visayas region, and what's standing in the way? That question anchored the Visayas Policy Research Forum, held September 22, 2026 at Sam's 21 Hotel in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

PIDS President Dr. Philip Arnold Tuaño and Iloilo City Mayor Hon. Raisa Treñas-Chu (delivered on her behalf by Ronald M. Cartagena) opened the program and highlighted the importance of partnerships and collaborations to translate knowledge into action. Engr. Arecio A. Casing Jr., Regional Director of DEPDev Region VI, underscored how local research can help inform the region's SDG Catch-up Plan.

The forum, supported by the Socioeconomic Research Portal for the Philippines Network, brought together six research papers from Region 6-based researchers, examining SDG monitoring gaps, infrastructure and industrial stagnation, local budget tracking for the SDGs, the impact of the Yolanda Permanent Housing Project, gender equality outcomes, and geographic disparities in SDG progress — each followed by panel discussions with reactors from government, academe, and civil society.

The forum ended with a policy commitment from DEPDev VI and a message from University of the Philippines Visayas Chancellor Dr. Clement Camposano, delivered by Dean Dr. Rodelio Subade of the Graduate School, who emphasized that the forum was only the beginning and looked forward to continued action on the knowledge and ways forward shared at the forum.

However, when big-ticket road construction intersects with coastal spaces, it often disrupts the daily survival, livelihood spaces, and sense of place of small-scale fishing communities.

We are pleased to feature the journal article "Fishing Along the Davao City Coastal Road: Narratives of Displacement and Resilience" published in the Philippine Journal of Public Policy (PJPP). 🌱 NEW DISCUSSION PAPER: Ang mga Kabataan sa Internet Ngayon, Kilala Ba Natin? 📱💻

Paano nga ba ginagamit ng mga bata at kabataan ang internet araw-araw, at paano natin sila gagabayan sa gitna ng paglaganap ng maling impormasyon at mga hamon sa digital na mundo?

We are pleased to announce the release of UP CIDS Discussion Paper, "Ang mga Kabataan sa Internet Ngayon, Kilala Ba Natin? Isang Primer para sa mga Magulang at G**o sa Elementarya at Hayskul". Authored by Lorina Calingasan, Junette Fatima Gonzales, and Angel Rocena, this primer is published under our Education Research Program (ERP). Based on a survey of students from Grades 6, 10, and 12, this study examines student internet habits, platform preferences, exposure to disinformation, and the crucial role of parents and teachers in cultivating "skeptical resilience".

🔍 Key Highlights from the Paper:
⚙️️ High Daily Digital Exposure: Over half of the student respondents spend more than six hours online daily, with many starting their internet use for schoolwork as early as Grade 3.
🏝️ Navigating Disinformation: While students frequently encounter fake or misleading posts on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, high self-reported confidence in spotting falsehoods highlights the need for systematic media literacy.

La Paz Batchoy is celebrated globally as Iloilo City's signature dish and a cornerstone of its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. But with the rise of mass-produced instant noodle variants and unregulated commercialization, how can local stakeholders protect its cultural authenticity and economic value?

We are pleased to announce the release of a new article in the Philippine Journal of Public Policy: Interdisciplinary Development Perspectives (2026), "Protecting the La Paz Batchoy: Pathways to Geographical Indication". Authored by Mary Rose Rebueno and Ramon Benedicto Alampay, this study explores the feasibility, structural requirements, and policy mechanisms for securing Geographical Indication (GI) protection under IPOPHL rules to safeguard La Paz Batchoy as intangible cultural heritage.
