โ˜€๏ธ NEW STUDY: Solar Energy and the Circular Economy ๐Ÿ”‹โ™ป๏ธ

As the Philippines accelerates its transition to renewable energy, what happens to solar panels when they reach the end of their lifespan?

We are pleased to share a new study titled "End-of-Life (EOL) Solar Panel Management from a Circular Economy Perspective: The Philippine Case." This research is a collaborative effort between the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST) and the UP CIDS Program on Political Economy (PEP), funded by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Philippines.

Authors Antoinette R. Raquiza, PhD, Marvin L. Samaniego, MSc, and John Victor P. Mateo, MSc examine how the Philippines can shift from a disposal-oriented paradigm toward a circular framework that prioritizes repair, reuse, and high-value recycling.

๐Ÿ” Key Research Highlights:
๐Ÿ”„ Circularity vs. Disposal: Exploring the potential for a "second life" for solar modules to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency.
โš ๏ธ Environmental Safety: Addressing the urgent need for domestic capacity to manage hundreds of thousands of solar PV modules before they end up in landfills.
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Infrastructure & Policy: Identifying the technological and social requirements needed to build a sustainable EOL management system over the next 25 to 30 years.
๐Ÿ“œ Strategic Recommendations: Highlighting the role of government leadership and targeted investment in domestic recycling technologies.

This study is a vital resource for environmental advocates, energy transition experts, and policymakers working to ensure that our green energy future is sustainable from start to finish.
