Sa paggunita ng Pambansang Araw ng mga Bayani, buong-giting nating pinupugayan ang mga martir at rebolusyonaryo na nag-alay ng kanilang dugo, pawis, at buhay upang baklasin ang tanikala ng samabyanan laban sa dayuhang pananakop at lokal na pang-aalipusta.

Hindi kailanman naging pasibo ang kasaysayan ng Pilipinas. Mula sa matapang na sigaw ng Katipunan upang wakasan ang tatlong siglo ng imperyalismong Kastila, sa madugong paglaban ng ating mga kababayan sa pananakop ng mga kolonyalistang Amerikano, hanggang sa gerilyang pakikibaka ng Hukbalahap laban sa pananalakay ng mga Hapones, ang dugo ng mga martir ang patunay na ang kasarinlan ay hindi ibinibigay kundi marahas na ipinaglalaban.

Hindi rin nagwakas ang kabayanihan nang matapos iregalo sa atin ng Estados Unidos ang huwad na kalayaan. Mas lalo itong tumingkad sa gitna ng madilim na kabanata ng pasistang diktadurang Marcos. Sa panahon ng harap-harapang pandarambong at pilit na pinatahimik ang boses ng sambayanan sa Batas Militar, hindi natakot ang mga mamamayan na magbuwis ng buhay sa mga lansangan at kanayunan upang gapiin ang tiranya at ibalik ang demokrasya.

Higit pa sa mga nakaukit na pangalan sa bantayog, ang mga tunay na bayani ng ating bayan ang mga nagpapatuloy ng diwa ng militanteng pakikibaka. Dala ito ng malawak na hanay ng mga manggagawa, magsasaka, propesyonal, kabataan, at ibaโ€™t ibang sektor ng masang Pilipino na araw-araw na nakikibaka laban sa kawalan ng lupa, mababang pasahod, at pasismo ng estado. Sila ang nagbubuhos ng lakas at dugo upang tutulan ang pananamantala ng mga naghaharing uri sa pangunguna ng paksyong Marcos-Duterte. Sa gitna ng lumalalang krisis sa ekonomiya, patuloy ang pagbebenta ng ating soberanya sa mga dayuhang puwersa at ang matinding pamamayagpag ng pampolitikang karahasan at paniniil sa karapatang pantao.

Bilang mga iskolar at inhinyero ng bayan, bitbit natin ang mga aral at tradisyon ng mga bayani ng nakaraan. Sa ating pagsasanay, isaalang-alang natin na ang agham at teknolohiya ay hindi kailanman dapat maging kasangkapan ng mga mapanupil. Sa halip, dapat silang maging sandata ng masang nakikibaka para sa tunay na kalayaan at pambansang demokrasya.
