We believe that every job, from the farmer in the field to the driver on the road and the laborer in the factory, is part and parcel of holding our country together. This Labor Day, we do not just celebrate the dignity of work; we speak out against the heavy burdens that our workers are forced to carry. It is a painful truth that while our laborers give their best every day, many are met with wages that cannot keep up with the rising cost of food.
Even with the current โฑ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐, families struggle to survive, while in the provinces, wages remain as low as โฑ๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ โฑ๐๐๐, deepening the divide between those who produce the nation's wealth and those who actually enjoy it.
We believe that a nation cannot truly prosper and be just if its foundations are neglected. Right now, that foundation is showing heavy cracks. We see the betrayal of the 70 to 80 workers at Kowloon House on West Avenue, who were reportedly hit with mass termination just days after standing up for the wage increases they were rightfully promised. This is the same reality for millions of contractualized workers nationwide, including over 830,000 individuals in the government alone, who are trapped in Contract of Service or Job Order roles with no security, no benefits, and no certainty for the future. When a worker cannot afford the very products they help create, or when a family remains in debt despite their parentโs long hours of toil, the system is clearly failing. A structure can only stand if its base is secure, but that base is being pushed to the breaking point by low pay and the silencing of those who speak up for their rights.
The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity remains committed to the belief that service to the people is our highest calling. We stand with the Filipino worker in the struggle for a life where hard work is met with dignity, security, and enough to provide a bright future for the next generation. We refuse to accept a society where modernization is used as a cover for the forced and inadequately planned phaseout of our jeepney driversโ livelihoods, or where demanding a living wage is met with termination or red-tagging.
