FIRST IN THE FAMILY 🎓

Mark Andy Pedere became the first member of his family to earn a university degree—and completed that milestone with the highest Latin honor from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Pedere graduated summa cm laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Philippine Studies from the UP Diliman College of Arts and Letters. He earned a weighted average grade of 1.066, placing him among the university’s 241 summa cm laude graduates in 2025.

His achievement carried a deeper meaning as a first-generation college graduate. The diploma he received represented not only years of academic work, but also a family milestone that had never been reached before him.

Pedere was selected to speak on behalf of more than 5,000 graduates during UP Diliman’s 114th General Commencement Exercises held on July 6, 2025. The ceremony carried the theme “Lunas,” emphasizing the role of knowledge, public service, and collective action in addressing society’s challenges.

In his address, Pedere reflected on how education should go beyond personal advancement. He urged fellow Iskolar ng Bayan graduates to use their knowledge and abilities to confront oppressive systems and remain connected to the Filipino people.

“Ang tunay na lunas sa isang sistemang mapaniil ay ang pag-aalay ng kolektibong utak at puso na nagmumula at tumutungo sa masang Pilipino,” he said.

From becoming the first university graduate in his family to standing before the entire UP Diliman Class of 2025, Pedere transformed a personal achievement into a call for graduates to make their education meaningful through service.

He entered the commencement ceremony as a first-generation student and left as a summa cm laude graduate whose voice represented thousands of new UP alumni.
