In celebration of the Ruby Anniversary of the National Institute of Geological Sciences,

The University of the Philippines-Diliman, UP National Institute of Geological Sciences, and the Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity bring you the 45th NIGS Lecture Series.

The lecture will be given by Professor Takashi Oguchi of the Center for Spatial Information Science, University of Tokyo, entitled "Human Impacts on Landforms in Japan and the Resultant Increase in Disaster Risk."

This will be held on 24 February 2023, 3:00 pm, at the NIGS Audio-Visual Room.

Abstract:

Japan is a populated country where human impacts on landforms are substantial. Some of them have significantly increased the risks of hydrological and sedimentological disasters. This presentation introduces three Japanese cases of increased disaster risks due to inappropriate human activities: 1) land subsidence in the lowlands of major cities caused by groundwater pumping, 2) earthquake-induced landslides at landfill areas, and 3) rainfall-induced debris flows from a landfill area. Lessons learned from these examples are summarized to provide future perspectives for disaster risk reduction.
