You've probably seen it countless times—a towering white building rising above Tumaga, proudly bearing the Ateneo seal. It's a familiar landmark to many, yet one question often goes unanswered:
Why is it called the Fr. William H. Kreutz, S.J. Campus?
The answer lies in the remarkable legacy of Fr. William "Bill" H. Kreutz, S.J. Succeeding Fr. Ernesto A. Carretero, S.J., he served as the second President of Ateneo de Zamboanga from 1989 to 2007, leading the institution through nearly two decades of growth and transformation. While the pursuit of university status began during Fr. Carretero's presidency, it was under Fr. Kreutz's leadership that Ateneo was granted university status in 2001, making him the first President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
But his vision extended far beyond academic excellence—it also shaped the University's future through the expansion of its campuses.
In 2005, the dream of a new campus in Tumaga began to take shape with its groundbreaking. A year later, in School Year 2006–2007, the Ateneo High School officially opened its doors at the new campus, welcoming its first students. In recognition of Fr. Kreutz's visionary leadership and invaluable contributions, the campus was officially named the Fr. William H. Kreutz, S.J. Campus.
Today, every classroom, hallway, and open space within the Kreutz Campus stands as a testament to a vision that has educated and formed generations of Ateneans. More than just a name on a building, it honors a leader whose dedication helped shape the Ateneo community we know today.
As we celebrate 20 years of the Tumaga Campus, we remember not only the place but also the people whose vision made it possible.
