UP MSI AT THE 6TH PHILIPPINES-AUSTRALIA MARITIME SECURITY DIALOGUE

Assistant Professors Dr. Michael Atrigenio and Dr. Charina Lyn Amedo-Repollo represented UP MSI in the Philippine academic delegation to the 6th Philippines-Australia Maritime Dialogue, held in Canberra, Australia on September 1, 2026.

Dr. Atrigenio and Dr. Amedo-Repollo participated as speakers for Session 2: Emerging Issues in Marine Resources and Environmental Protection of the Track 1.5 Dialogue, discussing the role of the blue economy, maritime domain awareness, marine protected areas, fisheries management, and marine scientific research in promoting maritime security in the region. Other members in the Philippine Academic Delegation included Atty. Isabel Cañaveral, Atty. Ana Cosme, and Atty. Neil Silva of the UP IMLOS - Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, as well as Dr. Mario Aurelio of the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences.

On September 2, the Philippine Academic Delegation also participated in the ANU Philippines Institute Roundtable. The discussion explored the role of academics and universities in supporting peace and diplomacy in Southeast Asia, with representatives from Australia National University and several Australian government offices.

The Track 1.5 Maritime Dialogue and the ANU Philippines Institute Roundtable were held in the context of several significant milestones in 2026: the Philippines’ celebration of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) in September, the 10th anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award, and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia.
