UP Virata School of Business

The University of the Philippines Cesar E.A. Virata School of Business (UP VSB) mourns the passing of former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Cesar E.A. Virata today, October 2, 2026, at age 95.

Cesar Virata served as the 5th Dean of then-UP College of Business Administration (UP CBA), from 1960-1967. His vision was to build a business school that would play a vital role in the country’s economic development. He prioritized the training of both future industry leaders and academics, institutionalizing the structural programs and core principles that form the backbone of the School. This enabled many faculty members to earn their masters and PhD degrees from top universities abroad – a privilege that is enjoyed even by today’s generation.

It is also during his term that an institutionalized mechanism within the School was established, providing valuable support for teaching, research, scholarships, and faculty and student development to this day.

The College was renamed in his honor by the UP Board of Regents on April 12, 2013.

The UP VSB community extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Dean Virata, and its sincerest thanks for his legacy of service to the School.

UP VSB is excited to welcome a new cohort of MBA and MSFin students this AY 2027-28!

The MBA Program is ideal for all high-potential professionals, whether they are in industrial, financial, government, or non-profit institutions. Managers with strong academic backgrounds, professional experience, personal maturity, and the interest and discipline to develop their managerial and leadership potential are offered a broad-based program curriculum that balances technical training and practical problem-solving.

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Call for Nominations: 2026 UP VSB Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA)

The school will honor its alumni who have outstanding accomplishments in the field of business management, and/or entrepreneurship, and/or public service. The awardees will be honored during the annual alumni homecoming on Saturday, December 5, 2026 (9 AM-2 PM) at the UPVSB Building.

This year, the honoree classes are: 1976 (Golden), 1981 (Sapphire), 1986 (Ruby), 1991 (Coral), 1996 (Pearl), 2001 (Silver), Classes of 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. All MBA, MS Finance, MS Management, PhD graduates and graduates of Classes 2011-2026 are also cordially invited.

Selection Criteria
1. The nominee must have demonstrated outstanding achievement as a professional manager in an industry, and/or;
2. The nominee is a successful entrepreneur whose firm has a respectable size in terms of Total Assets and/or number of personnel; and/or
3. The nominee has rendered distinguished public service.

[ANNOUNCEMENT] No Onsite Classes and Office Work for VSB (August 11) due to Power Interruption

Please be advised that there will be no face-to-face classes or onsite office operations at the UP Virata School of Business today, 11 August 2026 (Tuesday), due to a power interruption.

Faculty have been advised to revert to online (synchronous or asynchronous) instruction modes. Meanwhile, VSB Staff, including the VSB Library, have also been instructed to work from home until the issue is resolved.

Please be guided accordingly.
