Today, the UP Portia Sorority commemorates the 43rd death anniversary of Benigno Simeon βNinoyβ Aquino Jr., a politician, a journalist, and a patriot. During his lifetime, Ninoy Aquino took a progressive stand for Philippine democracy and expressed opposition against human rights violations during the martial law.
He dedicated his life to public service and advocated for the freedom of the Filipinos from the Marcos dictatorship. His willingness to sacrifice his own safety and freedom stands as a powerful testimony to his deep love for our country.
Ninoy Aquino is famously remembered for his statement, βThe Filipino is worth dying for.βIn the same vein, the Philippines is also worth fighting for. To fight for the Philippines means standing up for democracy, defending justice and human rights, and advocating for adequate public welfare. At present, there is a heightened need to fight for the Philippines amidst the widespread corruption surrounding flood-control and infrastructure projects across the nation. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we stand firm together in these trying times.
