HOLD SARA DUTERTE ACCOUNTABLE AND PURSUE JUSTICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ALL
As the Senate begins today the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, Pro-People Engineers and Leaders (PROPEL) and Engineers Say No to Corruption (ESNC) Network joins the growing call for truth, transparency, and accountability from the country's highest public officials. The impeachment process is a constitutional mechanism that must be upheld to ensure that no public official is above the law and that those who abuse their power and betray the public trust are held accountable.
The impeachment trial must not be reduced to a political contest among competing factions of the ruling elite. It is, above all, a democratic process through which the Filipino people can demand accountability from those entrusted with public office. The proceedings must be conducted fairly, transparently, and without unnecessary delays or political maneuvering, allowing the evidence to be fully presented before both the impeachment court and the Filipino people.
As engineers committed to public service, professional integrity, and nation-building, we recognize that corruption has far-reaching consequences for public infrastructure, public safety, and the delivery of essential services. Every peso lost to corruption translates into substandard projects, heightened disaster risks, and diminished public trust in government institutions. Upholding accountability is therefore essential not only to strengthen democratic governance but also to protect the welfare and safety of the Filipino people.
PROPEL and ESNC likewise emphasize that the pursuit of accountability does not end with the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte. Corruption remains deeply entrenched across different levels and branches of government and must be confronted wherever it exists. Public officials, contractors, and professionals who conspire to misuse public funds and compromise the integrity of public projects must likewise be investigated and held accountable.
Beyond the impeachment of Vice President Duterte, the Marcos administration must also be held accountable for its slow and inadequate response in bringing to justice those implicated in the flood control scandal, where the role of engineers in questionable infrastructure projects has come under public scrutiny. Despite widespread public concern over the misuse of billions of pesos in public funds and the devastating consequences of failed flood control projects, accountability for the primary actors and their accomplices remains unacceptably slow. The Filipino people deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation that holds every responsible individual accountable, regardless of position or political affiliation.
PROPEL and ESNC reiterate their call for good governance, transparency, and accountability across all levels and branches of government. We once again enjoin the Filipino engineering community to remain vigilant in upholding the highest standards of professional ethics and public service, and to ensure that corrupt individualsโwhether engineers, contractors, public officials, or bureaucrat-capitalistsโare held fully accountable for their actions. The struggle for accountability must be consistent, principled, and unwavering, for only through genuine public accountability can we build institutions that truly serve the Filipino people.
