On August 24, 2026, the UP Institute of Islamic Studies (UP IIS) welcomed its new, returning, and continuing students of the Master of Arts in Islamic Studies (MAIS) during a hyflex orientation, which allowed both onsite and online participation, for the First Semester of Academic Year 2026–2027.

Prof. Julkipli M. Wadi, Dean of UP IIS, opened the program with student-centered ideas and insights relevant to the participants. Asst. Prof. Darwin J. Absari, College Secretary of UP IIS, together with the Institute’s staff, provided the students with essential information on academic policies, guidelines, services, reminders, and other important matters to support them throughout their MAIS journey.

In his welcome remarks, Prof. Wadi emphasized that studying at the University of the Philippines Diliman goes beyond the four corners of the classroom. Asst. Prof. Absari likened the Institute to “a big room in a big house (the University),” where students can explore and engage in both curricular and non-curricular activities. Through these experiences, students will not only develop intellectually but also become more culturally aware, socially responsible, and empathetic individuals. This reflects the UP IIS mantra: “To be the premier national institution of learning in Islamic studies that promotes excellence, honor, and service.”

IN PHOTOS | Commemorating 80 Years of Egypt–Philippines Diplomatic Relations

The University of the Philippines, through the UP Institute of Islamic Studies (UP IIS) and the Center for International Studies (CIS), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, commemorated the 80th Anniversary of Egypt–Philippines Diplomatic Relations and Egypt National Day through the public lecture “Bridging the Middle East and the Pacific: Egypt’s Foreign Policy and Eight Decades of Partnership with the Philippines,” held on 23 July 2026 at the Atencio-Libunao Hall, College of Law, University of the Philippines Diliman.

The lecture was delivered by His Excellency Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt. In his address, he underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation between neighboring regions, particularly the Middle East and Southeast Asia, not only in the political sphere but also in areas involving the youth, the clean economy, people-centered development, and hospitality and cultural exchange. He emphasized that Egypt and the Philippines share a common responsibility as nations committed to peacebuilding and must continue working hand in hand to promote peace, stability, and mutual understanding both within their respective regions and across the world.

Prof. Wadi, Dean of the UP Institute of Islamic Studies, highlighted the enduring 80-year relationship between Egypt and the Philippines and noted that this partnership has also been reflected in the more than five decades of the UP IIS as an academic unit within the UP System. He cited UP’s long-standing engagements with several Egyptian universities, particularly collaborations with various Egyptian institutions and ministries. Echoing Dr. Abdelatty’s message on peace, Dean Wadi reaffirmed UP’s commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity, including its efforts to provide academic spaces for dialogue and critical engagement on pressing global issues, such as the genocide in Gaza, Palestine.

The diplomatic event was also graced by H.E. Ambassador Nader Zaki of the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Philippines; H.E. Ambassador Meshari Yousef Alnibari of the Embassy of the State of Kuwait to the Philippines; Professor Emeritus Caesar Saloma, UP Executive Vice President; Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano Jr., UP Vice President for Research and Innovation; Dr. Ian Kendrich C.
