RESEARCH | The extreme rise in temperature and accelerating climate change present significant challenges to sustainability, particularly in urban areas.

To support ongoing efforts to create sustainable communities and enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in the Philippines, we developed machine learning models to predict maximum temperatures in Manila and Dagupan City. These models serve as a valuable tool for informed decision-making.

RESEARCH | The Philippine government passed the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law in 2018 to strengthen primary care nationwide. In support of this law, the Philippine Primary Care Studies (PPCS) program piloted primary care interventions to identify practical and effective strategies for achieving universal health coverage.

This study aimed to determine the effects of primary care interventions on healthcare utilization and estimated out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses in selected urban, rural, and remote settings in the Philippines. Implementing primary care benefits will necessitate contextualized approaches to avoid inadvertent aggravation of inequities in healthcare.

RESEARCH | The Ifugao Rice Terraces in the Philippines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a living testament to centuries of indigenous agricultural knowledge. However, these historic terraces are facing challenges due to climate change, modern farming practices, and socio-economic pressures. This research explores how farmers in Ifugao can continue practicing Environmental Conservation Agriculture (ECA)—a sustainable farming approach that integrates traditional techniques with modern innovations—to ensure the long-term survival of the terraces.

RESEARCH | In the Philippines, passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is a crucial step in becoming a professional teacher, but the passing rate has been declining—from 31.45% in 2010 to just 27.28% in 2018. To address this issue, a study was conducted to predict the performance of future math teachers in the LET using machine learning.

Logistic Regression performed best when applied to evaluation data, making it the most suitable for predicting LET outcomes. Predictive models can help higher education institutions (HEIs) identify students who may need additional support, enabling more targeted interventions and personalized learning strategies.

RESEARCH | Epistemic structuralism is a school of thought that says society greatly affects how we gain knowledge and understanding. This can be antithetical to the emerging field of vice epistemology, which mainly studies character traits and other similar character-based factors that make gaining knowledge and understanding difficult. Some vice epistemologists have argued that vice epistemology and structuralism can co-exist, but the exact details of such a synthesis is still not clear. This paper discusses how a well-developed vice structural explanation can be done. It is the first sustained analysis of the structuralist challenge to the emerging field of vice epistemology.

RESEARCH | Understanding how complex biological systems work—like how our bodies process nutrients or how the environment balances carbon—requires accurate models. Biochemical Systems Theory (BST) is one way applied mathematicians create these models, using mathematical formulas to describe how different parts of a system interact. However, these models can be difficult to analyze because they often lack certain features that make them easier to study.

Our research solves this problem by developing algorithms that reshape these models into more organized forms called weakly reversible networks. This transformation makes it easier to predict how systems behave over time, especially how they maintain balance and respond to changes.

RESEARCH | Using the framework of disaster injustice, this study examines the material realities of housing reconstruction in Isla Sasa, an island community located in an estuary of Manila Bay, which is currently experiencing the severe effects of climate change, exacerbated by piecemeal and misguided government interventions.

Findings suggest that there is an accountability failure on the part of the government, as its disaster mitigation and management strategies do not take into account how social capital and differential access to material resources and government assistance actually intensify the effects of disasters in the community. Accountability gaps are also evident in flood adaptation infrastructure projects, which have increased the vulnerability of fisherfolk instead of reducing it.

RESEARCH | Teaching in the metaverse presents a dynamic frontier for educational innovation. Avatars, serving as digital representations of teachers, play a pivotal role in shaping virtual learning experiences. This study explores the impact of avatar design and behavioral realism on student perceptions of credibility and teaching effectiveness in avatar-mediated environments. Across all experimental conditions, students consistently favored realistic avatars over cartoonish ones.

From an educational standpoint, leveraging realistic avatars with authentic behaviors holds great promise for enhancing the teaching and learning experiences in the metaverse. Understanding the impact of avatar representations on student perceptions allows educators to tailor their virtual presence to better meet the needs and preferences of their students.

RESEARCH | This study assessed the effectiveness of reforestation efforts in Central Visayas from 2013 to 2019 using satellite imagery to track changes in vegetation cover in areas covered by the National Greening Program. The study found only a small increase in vegetation, with a 9% increase in dense forest cover (286 hectares) in the sampled areas. Negros Oriental showed the most forest gain (262 hectares), while Cebu lost 29 hectares. There was no significant change in overall forest cover, according to statistical analysis. Issues like low tree survival, land conversion for tourism, illegal logging, and the expansion of farms may have hindered progress.

RESEARCH | The Abaknon, an indigenous group in Capul Island, Northern Samar, has unique traditional knowledge and practices that have enabled them to adapt to local environmental conditions over generations. For example, although the farmers do not conduct formal soil testing, they have developed an indigenous soil classification system that is reliable and sustainable. Their climate change adaptation practices also reflect both coping and long-term adaptation strategies. The sustainability levels of indicators such as diversity of main food sources and diversification of agricultural income sources range from good to excellent. Understanding and preserving this knowledge can help maintain cultural heritage and provide valuable insights for climate resilience.
