The exhibit is up at the UP ICE Lobby until May 29, featuring the final design outputs of our CE 196: Civil Engineering Design Project students.

CE 196 is where civil engineering students bring everything together—from analysis and design to teamwork, sustainability, ethics, and project management. Working on real-world engineering challenges, students develop practical and responsible solutions that respond not only to technical requirements, but also to economic, environmental, and social needs.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴

Dr. Gil Cruz Jr., together with Chiny Vispo, Maan Josue, Asst. Prof. Franz Santos, and Llyod Dexter Briz of the UP ICE Water Resources and Coastal Engineering Group (WRCEG), recently published their paper titled “Influence of Typhoon and Monsoon-Enhanced Rainfall Patterns on Riverine Flooding in Balanga City, Philippines” in Frontiers in Water journal.

The study examined how typhoons intensified by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) can produce more severe and longer-lasting flooding compared to ordinary typhoon events. Using hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, the researchers demonstrated how compound rainfall events significantly increase flood depths, river levels, and inundation extent in vulnerable communities along the Talisay River in Balanga City, Bataan.

The findings highlight the importance of incorporating typhoon-monsoon interactions into local flood hazard assessment, infrastructure planning, and disaster risk reduction strategies in the Philippines.

This research was funded by the DOST PCIEERD through the PCIEERD-Grants-in-Aid (GIA) program, under the project “Development of Water Footprint Decision Support & Visualization System for Sustainable Urban Water Management”.
