Courage for the motherland! 🦸🇵🇭
National Heroes Day is a public holiday commemorated every last Monday of August, as stated in Republic Act No. 9492, s. 2007.
From known to unknown heroes, this day recognizes the bravery of individuals who fought for the country’s independence from the foreign rule of Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese.
This day also particularly remembers the Cry of Pugad Lawin that sparked the 1896 Philippine revolution against Spanish colonizers led by Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan.
As early as 1931, National Heroes Day was already celebrated in accordance with the Legislature Act 3827, even though the country was an unincorporated territory under the United States government.
At present, some modern heroes represent and serve the Philippines and the Filipinos, such as frontliners, true leaders, and athletes.
Search and Rescue (SAR) team saves typhoon victims, Boy Scout Chris Lorenz Fabian shielded his classmates during the tragic shooting incident at San Jose National High School (SJNHS) in Tacloban City last June, while Carlos Yulo (gymnastics), Hidilyn Diaz (weightlifting), and Alex Eala (tennis) are athletes of the country.
They help other Filipinos and raise the Philippine flag in the world of sports. Patriotism, exhibited in diverse ways, reflects one of National University’s core values.
