On the occasion of the International Day of the Seafarer 2026, we honor and celebrate the extraordinary men and women at sea whose silent strength and daily sacrifices keep global trade alive and the world connected.

This year’s theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks.”, reflects the reality of their journey. Seafarers are the invisible force of global progress, who endure long months away from home and work under demanding conditions, yet continue to serve with courage and unwavering commitment.

As President of the WIMA Asia and WIMAPhil, I express my deepest respect and gratitude to all seafarers around the world. Your contributions and sacrifices are foundational to the world economy and international supply chains.

To our Filipino seafarers, you remain a source of national pride and global excellence. Your hard work and professionalism continue to elevate the Philippines as one of the most trusted and respected maritime nations in the world. You are living proof that Filipino skill, resilience, and dedication are world-class.

This day is also a powerful reminder that recognition must go beyond words and recognition. The maritime industry must continuously strengthen its commitment to protecting seafarers by creating safe working environments and developing policies that ensure their well-being and professional advancement.

Education empowers minds, and empowered minds transform the maritime industry into the future of equality, excellence, and leadership. The maritime academe plays a vital role in shaping future industry leaders, and as the sector continues to embrace diversity and inclusion, educational institutions are becoming active partners in promoting gender equality and maritime excellence. In line with this commitment, the Maritime Polytechnic College Foundation – Legazpi City (MARINERS’ Legazpi) recognizes the significance of the recently concluded 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime Forum held on 18 May 2026 at the Manila Prince Hotel, organized by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in collaboration with Women in Maritime Asia (WIMA Asia) and Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL).

With the theme “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence” and sub-theme “Voices of Resilient Women in Maritime in the Face of Global Uncertainty,” the forum served as a meaningful platform for maritime educators, students, cadets, and industry professionals to better understand the growing role of women in the maritime sector and the importance of inclusive leadership in today’s global maritime environment.

The event was graced by distinguished maritime and national leaders, including Administrator Sonia Malaluan, of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA); Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla, of the Philippine Commission for Women (PCW); and Ms. Rhodora Azanza, National Scientist and former President of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), whose presence underscored the significance of advancing gender-responsive policies, women empowerment, and inclusive development within the maritime industry.

For institutions such as the MARINERS’ Legazpi, the event reinforced the importance of integrating gender awareness, inclusivity, and leadership development into maritime education and training. The discussions on gender mainstreaming, workplace equality, and safe maritime spaces highlighted the need for the academic institutions to continuously prepare future professionals to be advocates of respect, professionalism, and equal opportunity in the industry.

The forum featured distinguished maritime leaders and professionals who shared their experiences, insights, and challenges as women navigating the maritime field. These discussions served as valuable learning opportunities for aspiring mariners, encouraging them to embrace diversity and contribute positively to the evolving maritime culture.

As emphasized by Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, “At MARINERS’ Legazpi, we believe that maritime education is not only about developing competent seafarers but also about nurturing future leaders who uphold equality, professionalism, and respect within the global maritime community. The celebration of the 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime reminds us that the academe plays a crucial role in empowering women and inspiring future maritime professionals to become advocates of inclusivity and excellence.”

The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration between regulators, industry stakeholders, organizations, and the academe in building a future-ready maritime workforce. By promoting equal participation and empowering women in maritime education, shipboard operations, leadership, and policymaking, the industry moves closer toward sustainable growth and global competitiveness.

As future maritime professionals continue their journey in the academe, the lessons and inspiration drawn from the 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime Forum serve as a reminder that maritime excellence thrives in an environment where diversity is respected, opportunities are equal, and every voice is valued.
