Expanding the clinical settings available to its nursing students, the Filamer Christian University College of Nursing (FCUCN) established a new partnership with The Health Centrum (THC) to further bridge academic preparation with hospital-based practice, Aug. 17.

The partnership marks its initial implementation with Level 4 Batch Eniteo, who are set to begin their scheduled clinical duties at THC.

For FCUCN Clinical Coordinator Atty. Ma. Juna V. Dieta, MAN, RN, the partnership signals an important step in the studentsโ€™ continued clinical development.

โ€œAs the Clinical Coordinator, it is truly fulfilling to see our Level 4 BSN students take this important step toward their clinical journey at The Health Centrum,โ€ Atty. Dieta said.

Beyond the clinical exposure itself, Atty. Dieta underscored the partnershipโ€™s potential to shape the studentsโ€™ development as future healthcare professionals.

โ€œWe are grateful for this new partnership, which will give our students meaningful learning experiences and help them grow not only as skilled nurses, but also as compassionate and confident healthcare professionals,โ€ she added.

As the partnershipโ€™s inaugural activity, THC conducted a hospital orientation for Batch Eniteo ahead of their scheduled duties at the facility.

The orientation introduced the students to the hospitalโ€™s different departments and areas that they will encounter during their clinical exposure.

The students were also briefed on documentation procedures and the dos and donโ€™ts they are expected to observe while performing their duties at the facility.

Through the partnership, FCUCN and THC seek to provide Filamerian nursing students with meaningful clinical experiences that complement their academic preparation and contribute to their development as competent healthcare professionals.

Demonstrating a strong aptitude for statistical reasoning, three Level 1 students from the College of Nursing (CN) swept the top three spots in the university-wide Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Bowl elimination round, Aug. 13.

Justin Anthony Villaron of Level 1-A emerged as the overall champion, besting fellow competitors from the College of Nursing and representatives from the College of Teacher Education (CTE).

โ€œI never planned on competing in the Philippine Statistics Quiz, let alone winning it,โ€ said Villaron.

Villaron revealed that he felt a mix of anxiety and pressure during the competition as he was thrown into the competition unprepared and was surprised to come out as the winner when the scores were tallied.

โ€œOverall, it was a great experience for me and my peers to showcase our stock knowledges in statistics as nursing students,โ€ Villaron added.

Villaron expressed his gratitude to those who pushed and trusted him to represent their section despite his initial uncertainty about competing.

โ€œI am grateful to everyone who pushed and trusted me to represent our section even when I didn't see it coming myself. I also want to congratulate the other contestant for stepping up and showcasing incredible stock knowledge, grit, and sportsmanship throughout the entire competition!โ€ Villaron said.

Meanwhile, Karlyn Lorenzo and Thessa Marie Beyo, both from Level 1-A, secured the second and third spots, respectively, completing the CN freshmenโ€™s sweep of the top three places.

The Math Pirates spearheaded the competition under the supervision of Dr. Susan O. Parce.

As the top three finishers, Villaron, Lorenzo, and Beyo will represent the university in the upcoming Philippine Statistics Quiz Bowlโ€“Provincial Round.

Every August 21, we commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day, remembering the life and sacrifice of former Senator Benigno โ€œNinoyโ€ Aquino Jr., whose assassination on August 21, 1983, became a defining moment in the nationโ€™s struggle against dictatorship. After years of opposition to the Marcos regime, imprisonment, and exile in the United States, Aquino returned to the Philippines despite the dangers he faced, believing that the countryโ€™s political crisis could only be addressed through the Filipino people. His return was cut short when he was assassinated upon arriving at the Manila International Airport, an event that intensified public opposition to authoritarian rule.

Three years before his death, Aquino reflected on whether the Filipino people were worth sacrificing for. In a speech before the Asia Society in New York on August 4, 1980, he said, โ€œI have carefully weighed the virtues and the faults of the Filipino and I have come to the conclusion that he is worth dying for because he is the nationโ€™s greatest untapped resource.โ€

Aquinoโ€™s assassination did not silence the movement he had come to represent. Instead, it galvanized growing opposition to the dictatorship and strengthened calls for accountability, freedom, and democratic governance. The years that followed culminated in the 1986 People Power Revolution, which ended the Marcos dictatorship and led to the restoration of democratic institutions. His importance to Philippine democracy, therefore, lies not only in the life he gave but also in the movement his death helped awaken.

Armed with evidence-backed positions and pointed rebuttals, the College of Nursing (CN) debating team "Vox Veritas" emerged victorious against the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) during the Elimination Round of the Interdepartmental Debate at Roblee Hall, Aug. 20.

Defending the affirmative side of the motion, โ€œLIBRT: Abortion be decriminalized in the Philippines,โ€ the CN team argued that criminalization leaves women vulnerable to unsafe procedures while failing to address the realities of problematic and unwanted pregnancies.

Necessity speaker Kyle Laurence Ibanez called attention to the lack of adequate safeguards for women facing problematic pregnancies and the continued prevalence of underground and clandestine abortions.

Focusing on the benefits of the proposition, Beneficiality speaker Keith Danrev Adam argued that decriminalization could help reduce maternal mortality, uphold the autonomy of survivors of r**e and in**st and other unwanted pregnancies, and lessen the stigma surrounding underground abortions.

Rounding out the case, Practicability speaker Genevieve Pangan defended the feasibility of the proposition by emphasizing the need for regulation, legislation, and proper implementation, while citing Department of Health Administrative Order No. 45, Series of 2000, which provides measures for the prevention and management of abortion complications.

Joining the three speakers were researchers Geomarie Dave Centillo, Zakura Marie Alisla, and Rhea Chen Gajisan.

The team was coached by Atty. Ma. Juna V. Dieta, MAN, RN.

Organized by the Filamer Christian University Student Republic (FCUSR), the interdepartmental debate formed part of the activities leading up to the universityโ€™s 122nd Founding Anniversary.

Their tireless efforts play a vital role in helping communities rise, recover, and rebuild after disasters and conflicts have turned their lives upside down.

Their compassion, courage, and empathy remind us that even the smallest act of kindness can make a meaningful difference. May their example inspire us to extend a helping hand to those in need, stand in solidarity with one another, and work together toward a safer, more compassionate, and brighter future for all.
