Can YouTube videos be used to observe the ecology and exploitation of mud lobsters in the Philippines?

A content analysis of 30 videos from this video-sharing website shows that fisherfolks use different methods such as bamboo traps, disturbing mounds, and the 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪-𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪 to catch mud lobsters. The sampled videos also show that mud lobsters are caught in mangrove stands, fishponds, and rice fields near mangrove forests—all of which are typical habitats for these crustaceans. Researchers of this study were also alarmed for seeing videos showing the use of toxic chemicals in catching lobsters.

Although the researchers affirm that field surveys are irreplaceable, they nonetheless appreciate the rising potential of social media as a unique “field” for ecological studies.
