Remember Ninoy: A Life of Courage and Conviction🎗️

Today, August 21, as the nation commemorates Ninoy Aquino Day, we look back on the life and legacy of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., whose courage and political struggle became closely associated with the Filipino people’s call for democracy during the Martial Law period.

Through his years in public service and his opposition to authoritarian rule, Ninoy Aquino stood as a prominent voice for democratic institutions, civil liberties, and responsible governance. His assassination on August 21, 1983, became a defining moment that intensified the Filipino people’s call for political change and helped pave the way for the restoration of democracy in 1986.

More than four decades after his death, his legacy remains part of the nation’s history—a reminder of the courage required to defend freedom and hold power accountable.

COLUMN| 𝗔𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗼 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗜𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀?

Development is a promise easily made with concrete and steel, but in the rugged uplands of Antique, that promise has become a cautionary tale.

For nearly a decade, road developments connecting San Remigio to neighboring towns in Iloilo, including Leon and Tubungan, have been praised as major drivers of economic growth. These projects have been presented as game-changers for mountain tourism in places like Barangay Aningalan known as the "Little Baguio of Antique," as well as vital arterial routes for highland agricultural produce, these multi-million-peso DPWH road projects were supposed to shorten travel times and support local livelihoods.

However, when projects are met with persistent delays, environmental degradation, and questions regarding regulatory compliance, the narrative of "progress" begins to fracture.

Delays, meanwhile, are not merely an inconvenience. Every unfinished or repeatedly delayed projects can mean prolonged disruptions to transportation, increased costs for local businesses and farmers, and opportunities for economic growth left unrealized. Public infrastructure is intended to serve communities, and when completion is repeatedly pushed back, it is the public that continues to shoulder the consequences.

The stance taken by AMLIG Antique Alliance, calling for investigations into DPWH contracts, demands compliance with environmental laws, such as the Presidential Decree No. 1586, and seeking accountability through the Office of the Ombudsman and the DENR, signals a vital shift in how local citizens view public works. Road development can no longer be viewed simply as a political trophy or a line item in a national budget; it must be held to strict standards of environmental stewardship and fiscal integrity. Additionally, local government units, regional agencies, and contractor entities must recognize that public oversight is not an obstacle to development, it is its safeguard.

The development of roads through Antique’s highlands is unquestionably necessary for the province's economic growth. However, concrete alone does not build a community's future, transparent governance does. To ensure that projects in Antique and across the province fulfill their intended purpose, oversight bodies must conduct thorough audits, enforce environmental compliance, and ensure that those entrusted with public funds answer to the public interest. Only when accountability becomes the foundation of every highway and bridge can Antique truly move forward.

𝗛𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗻: 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀

A film does not always start with a script. Sometimes it starts with a conversation or a story that needs to be told.

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) celebrates its annual Pelikula Agraryo Film Festival, a short film competition that highlights the stories and experiences of agrarian reform beneficiaries and organizations. St. Anthony’s College (SAC) was invited by DAR-Antique to represent the province in the competition, leading to the formation of 1958 Collectives Production, headed by Mr. Pepito Jr. F. Roldan.

For 1958 Collectives Production, the real story unfolded when they met the Sto. Rosario Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association, Inc. (STARBA), an agrarian reform beneficiary organization in Sto. Rosario, Pandan, Antique.

Through their conversations and interviews with the organization, the filmmakers discovered a community shaped by challenges, struggles, and resilience. What initially began as a gathering information for the production became the heart of the story, "𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒂"—a fiber of hope. Their experiences resonated with the filmmakers, leading them to choose STARBA as the focus of their story.

STARBA’s main products are made from 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒈, a material woven through time, patience, and hard work. Each strand comes together to create something stronger, much like the people behind the organization. Their journey was not without hardship, yet like the threads of a banig, they continued to hold together.

Agrarian reform beneficiaries continue to face challenges, including limited support and opportunities, despite their contributions to their communities.

Beyond being a simple livelihood product, the banig becomes a reflection of their lives, a reminder that no matter how many times we fall, there will always be a thread of hope to hold on to— a hibla.

The film became one of the eighteen official entries under the Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Organization (ARBO) category of the Pelikula Agraryo Film Festival 2026. More than simply creating a film for a competition, 1958 Collectives sought to give voice to a community whose experiences are often overlooked and to bring their realities closer to the audience.

Before bringing the story to the screen, the group, composed of Anthonian film enthusiasts, participated in a series of workshops conducted by the Regional Office of the Department of Agrarian Reform – VI. From there, their filmmaking journey began. The film was premiered at FDCP Cinematheque Centre Iloilo from August 12 to August 14, 2026.

The filmmakers found a way to tell these stories and bring them to light. They did not just want to show the struggles of the people. They wanted to show the strength that helps them keep moving. They wanted to show the hibla that gives them hope.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞: SAC HED Students Join Nationwide CPR Training

St. Anthony’s College (SAC) Higher Education Department (HED) students strengthened their lifesaving skills through a nationwide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training hosted by the Philippine Red Cross Antique Chapter in observance of National CPR Day at the SAC MHM Building on August 15, 2026.

The initiative aimed to promote CPR awareness and prepare participants to provide immediate assistance during life-threatening situations.

The Student Organization Coordinating Council (SOCC) successfully concluded its Freshmen Orientation on August 7, 2026, at the Bishop De Wit Hall (BDWH), welcoming the newest batch of Anthonian students as they embarked on their college journey.

The orientation began with the introduction to the College's campus services, academic procedures, and institutional policies, equipping them with essential information to help them navigate campus life.

St. Anthony's College Student Republic (SACSR) President Sadrodin Abdullah welcomed the new students, encouraging them to embrace the opportunities that await them.

"As you begin this new adventure, don't be afraid to dream big, ask questions, make mistakes, and learn from every experience. College is not only about earning a degree; it's about discovering your purpose, building lifelong friendships, creating unforgettable memories, and becoming the best version of yourself," President Abdullah said.

On the afternoon event, SOCC President Joanna Yzabel Montero introduced the College's accredited student organizations and clubs, encouraging freshmen to participate in extracurricular activities and develop their leadership potential beyond the classroom.

Representatives from each organization give their speech of encouragement, highlighting their respective advocacies, programs, and opportunities while inviting the new students to become active members of the campus community.

The orientation concluded with interactive games, fostering camaraderie among the freshmen and marking the official start of their academic journey at SAC. The event set a welcoming tone for a college experience centered on learning, leadership, friendship, and personal growth.

The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants St. Anthony’s College Chapter (SAC JPIA) dominated the 2026 PICPA Accountancy Week, securing all winning places in the academic quiz bowls and landing top spots in the talent competitions against the University of Antique (UA) JPIA.

The week-long celebration concluded on July 18, 2026, with the JPIA Day held at Casa Agusta. The event was organized by the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Antique Chapter, led by Chapter President Mr. Kim Rommel E. Panaguiton, CPA, and Executive Vice President Dr. Joel F. Narra, CPA, along with the PICPA officers, in partnership with UA JPIA and SAC JPIA.

In addition to the academic awards, SAC JPIA earned placements in the Accountants Got Talent (AGT) singing and dancing competitions. These results demonstrated the students' capacity to achieve success in both academic and creative fields through consistent discipline and hard work.

In the Basic Financial Accounting and Reporting (BFAR) Quiz Bowl, SAC JPIA won the top three spots. Ma. Antonette Silla, Hazel Dawn Cahilig, and Lyssa Mananquil earned first place. Pauline Mae Sesbino, Kate Peralta, and Lyka Hya Pullan secured second place, while Karla Ysabelle Flores, Ellah Jeasha Millamena, and Marriel Serinas finished in third place.

The placements were mirrored in the Financial Accounting & Reporting and Advanced FAR (FAR/AFAR) category, where SAC JPIA again secured the top three ranks. Alexander James Cazeñas, Ma. Antonette Silla, and Pauline Mae Sesbino placed first. The second-place position went to Alyssa Drew Flores, John Rey Danao, and Francyne Jhayda Española, while Ellah Jeasha Millamena, Hazel Dawn Cahilig, and Lyka Hya Pullan completed the category in third place.

For the cultural events, the delegation secured placements in both the AGT Dance and Singing contests. Ma. Gwyneth Antonio, Lyka Hya Pullan, Charm Abellon, Jasmine Rose Gelacio, Maria Theresa Tumamak, Joville Mae Camillo, Alexander James Cazeñas, Feyne Valerie Macantan, and Claire Jasmine Tamayo won second place in the dance category. In the singing contest, Ma. Gwyneth Antonio won first place, while Maria Theresa Tumamak secured third place.

12 graduates of St. Anthony's College successfully passed the July 2026 Master Plumber Licensure Examination, based on the results released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on July 15.

The successful examinees are Sarah Joy F. Bernesto, Ed Mia Ashley Z. Cagalawan, Rachelle Mae N. Dinglasan, Jimmy Jr. B. Dolendo, Glyssa Mae B. Doroquis, John Von Myvryck P. Escaner, Princess Ninfa M. Macailing, John Carlo E. Marcelino, Ryan R. Marquez, Angie Lou S. Matriano, Lindsey Lennel A. Naranjo, and Leniel Dave A. Ninora.

According to the PRC, 4,907 out of 6,237 examinees passed the July 2026 Master Plumber Licensure Examination, which was administered on July 11 and 12 in testing centers across the country, including Iloilo. The results were released three working days after the examination.

The achievement of the 12 new Anthonian Master Plumbers adds to St. Anthony's College's roster of licensed professionals and highlights the graduates' successful completion of the national licensure examination.
