Today, we recognize the vital role of physical and occupational therapy in the lives of individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Physical therapy helps improve mobility and strength, while occupational therapy supports daily activities and promotes independence. ๐ช
๐งก August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month๐งก
SMA is a rare genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting, due to the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord. Itโs the second most common severe hereditary disease of infancy and childhood, impacting thousands of families worldwide.
๐ฌ Caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene, SMA disrupts the bodyโs ability to produce the SMN protein โ essential for muscle movement and control. While it can severely affect mobility, it does not impact intelligence.
Thereโs no cure yet, but thanks to early diagnosis, breakthrough medications, and supportive therapies, people with SMA are living longer, stronger, and more empowered lives than ever before.
At IndeeLift, we stand in support of the SMA community and advocate for awareness, accessibility, and independence. ๐ช
Letโs use this month to educate, elevate voices, and push for progress. ๐
