Beyond Luck, Built on Grit: From Student Intern to Full-Time Trailblazer in Luxury Hospitality
Real growth begins where comfort ends. Rachelle Joy Davaoโs journey is living proof that unshakeable determination can command a global spotlight.
An alumna of the University of Antique - College of Management and Governance, Rachelleโs journey began with a simple โwhat if.โ Applying for the Student Internship Abroad Program (SIAP) was a leap of faith, but it became the catalyst for an extraordinary career transformation. After completing her internship at W Hong Kong, Rachelle has earned a coveted role as a full-time Graduate Trainee with full work credits, a position that puts her on track for cross-departmental advancement within the luxury hotel brand.
Carrying the Subay Spirit Abroad
Transitioning to W Hong Kongโs fast-paced Style Department meant stepping into a high-stakes luxury environment with zero initial operational experience.
"It seemed like I invited myself into a war without any weapon to defend myself," Rachelle recalls.
Yet, she relied on a mindset rooted in her alma materโs culture: the spirit of the Subay (ant) symbolizing dedication, resilience, and the strength to carry heavy loads through sheer persistence.
When into demanding operational roles, Rachelle quickly learned to navigate high-pressure situations. After just one week of training as a runner, she courageously stepped up to take full responsibility when asked by her manager. On any given shift, she managed floor pantries, fulfilled guest orders, and delivered amenities across floors, proving that physical agility must be matched by sharp mental presence. In an environment where every second counts, her quick problem-solving and proactive communication kept her grounded and effective under pressure.
Rachelleโs transition from intern to full-time international employee was no coincidence. During her training, her exceptional performance earned her the Best Stager Award, a testament to the high standards, initiative, and attention to detail she brought to the hotel daily.
Understanding that effort must be paired with visibility, Rachelle actively embodied the core "W Personality" being passionate, playful, audacious, and polished.
Working efficiently with minimal supervision, seeking constant feedback, and taking total ownership of her growth. Approaching every task with curiosity and a firm belief that skills can always be sharpened through the right attitude. Managing peak-season room turnovers while seamlessly navigating cultural and language barriers.
When management offered her a permanent role with rotational paths across departments, it affirmed that her daily commitment had been recognized.
"Being ready is not a feeling, itโs a decision," she notes. "We donโt get ready, then go. We go, and become ready on the way."
Earning the Seat
To anyone who might chalk her success up to simple luck, Rachelle offers a grounded reality check. Her breakthrough was forged in quiet sacrifices, relentless discipline, and deep faith.
"They never saw the waiting, the tears, the doubts, and sacrifices I poured into it," she shares. "Everything I have now was prayed and worked for. It was never handed over."
Her journey serves as a powerful reminder to fellow UAeรฑos aiming for international horizons: success isn't given; it is built step by step through audacity, preparation, and an unshakeable determination to claim your place at the table. University of Antique
