The 51st PAMI Convention, the annual gathering organized by the Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (PAMI), was held on February 19–20, 2026 at Park Inn by Radisson in Bacolod City. The convention brought together representatives from PAMI-membered maritime schools, industry leaders, and key stakeholders from across the country to discuss pressing developments and emerging trends in maritime education and training.

This year’s theme, “Riding Waves of Change,” reflects the maritime sector’s ongoing transformation amid rapid technological advancements and increasing environmental standards. It underscores the need for Maritime Higher Education (MHE) institutions to adapt to innovations such as dual-fuel engines, artificial intelligence (AI), and green shipping technologies—ensuring that academic programs remain aligned with the demands of an evolving global industry.

Throughout the convention, discussions emphasized the urgent need to bridge the gap between maritime education and the fast-paced advancement of modern vessel operations and sustainable shipping practices. As the industry becomes more automated, intelligent, and environmentally driven, institutions must upgrade curricula, enhance faculty competencies, and strengthen collaboration with industry partners.

The event highlighted that producing future-ready seafarers goes beyond complying with minimum regulatory standards. It requires equipping students with adaptability, advanced technical knowledge, and a forward-thinking mindset to thrive in a competitive global shipping environment. The future of maritime depends greatly on how effectively education transforms today.

The event was graced by distinguished resource speaker Dr. Ian Chew, President of YoungShip Singapore, along with Sabino Cloma, President of PAMI, whose insights enriched discussions on innovation, leadership, and the evolving role of maritime institutions.

Negros Maritime College Foundation Inc. (NMCFI) was represented at the two-day convention by School President Dr. Zeth A. Dela Cruz and Officer-in-Charge for Academic Affairs, 2/E Michael Don Orlina. Their participation reflects the institution’s proactive commitment to aligning with global maritime developments and continuously enhancing the quality of education and training provided to its cadets.

Dr. Zeth A. Dela Cruz, President of Negros Maritime College Foundation Inc. (NMCFI), recently held a strategic meeting with Atty. Labial, President and Owner of Medallion Shipping Company and Central Visayas Maritime. The discussion centered on expanding and strengthening apprenticeship opportunities for NMCFI cadets to ensure meaningful shipboard training and real-world maritime exposure.

The collaboration aims to provide cadets with hands-on experience aligned with industry standards, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge in actual vessel operations. Through partnerships with established maritime companies, NMCFI reaffirms its commitment to bridging academic instruction with practical training.

This initiative reflects the institution’s ongoing mission to develop competent, industry-ready maritime professionals equipped to succeed in the global shipping sector.

As part of its continued commitment to academic excellence and faculty support, the school provided laptops to its faculty members this year to enhance teaching and learning delivery.

The distribution took place during the first management meeting of the second semester last month. The initiative was spearheaded by School President Dr. Zeth A. Dela Cruz together with 2/E Michael Don Orlina, Officer-in-Charge for Academic Affairs, who led the formal turnover of the devices.

These laptops are intended to support faculty members in preparing lessons, developing presentations, and managing academic responsibilities more efficiently. By equipping educators with reliable digital tools, the institution strengthens its integration of technology in the classroom, fosters more engaging learning experiences for students, and reinforces its commitment to effective teaching and faculty well-being.
