As science majors and future educators, our special mission goes beyond just training to become teachers, we are training to become a bridge between complex scientific concepts and the curious minds of the next generation, cultivate a society that values evidence and embraces innovation. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭🐧🔬

What if a penguin could exist without feathers, wings, or even a heartbeat? Surprisingly, there is a molecule in chemistry whose structure is similar to the shape of a penguin. Known as Penguinone, this unusual compound shows how something as small as a molecule can have an appearance that reminds us of an animal we see in nature.

At first sight, its chemical structure appears to be just a set of lines, letters, and numbers, but on closer inspection you can make out the shape of a penguin. The fact that there is this unexpected similarity makes Penguinone an interesting example of how chemistry can relate to things that we recognize in everyday life. Regarding its appearance, it also has a chemical structure and properties that are worth examining.

It is an organic compound composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, its molecular formula is C10H14O and this shows that it has 10 carbon atoms, 14 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom; the scientific name for it is 3,4,4,5-tetramethylcyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one. Even though the name might appear difficult to pronounce it does indicate how the atoms are arranged in the molecule. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (n.d.) states that Penguinone has a molecular weight of about 150.22 grams per mole and it is a member of a group of organic compounds known as ketones, these being compounds that have a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom.

Penguinone is not a living organism like the penguins that we see in nature, but rather a chemical compound which has attracted attention due to its unusual structure and the fact that it is similar to a penguin.

The name arises from the way the molecule’s chemical structure appears when it is drawn on paper. The different parts of the molecule can be compared to the various body parts of a penguine. The oxygen atom (O) at the top is similar to the penguin’s head, the ring consisting of six carbon atoms makes up its body or trunk, and the two methyl groups (CH3) on the sides are like its wings, while the two methyl groups at the bottom look like its feet.

Even though Penguinone has no actual connection with real penguins, its structure makes it look familiar. The suffix ‘one’ in its name also has a chemical meaning since it is commonly found in the names of ketones.

It is not clearly known who was the first person to give it the nickname. As Neufeldt pointed out in an article from 2010, the molecule’s unusual name and the difficulty of determining where it came from are noteworthy, making it an interesting example of how a chemical compound can come to be known through a name based on its appearance.

It is not merely a molecule with an unusual appearance since its structure also enables us to grasp some key concepts in chemistry; it is a member of a group of substances known as ketones, these compounds possessing a particular feature referred to as a carbonyl group, in which a carbon atom is double-bonded to an oxygen atom (C=O), and in Penguinone this group is located within a ring consisting of six carbon atoms.

It also contains two double bonds between carbon atoms, which classify it as a compound known as a dienone; moreover, it has four methyl groups (CH3) bonded to its carbon ring. These groups are what contribute to the unique structure of Penguinone (National Center for Biotechnology Information, n.d.).

A noteworthy aspect of Penguinone is that its structure prevents certain chemical reactions from taking place. For instance, it does not undergo a reaction known as the dienone-phenol rearrangement because the methyl groups adjacent to the ring obstruct the changes required for the reaction to occur. This demonstrates how the arrangement of atoms can influence the chemical behavior of a compound (Hagenbruch & Hünig, 1983).

This demonstrates that chemistry is not merely concerned with complicated formulas and laboratory experiments; a simple drawing of a molecule is enough to capture our attention and cause us to become curious as to how it works.

Even though it is mostly famous for its strange look, it also serves as an example of how atoms are arranged and how this arrangement influences chemical reactions. The reason its structure is so interesting is that the penguin-like shape is most easily identified in a two-dimensional drawing; in a three-dimensional model the similarity is not so clear (May, n.d.).

In the end, Penguinone reminds us that science can reveal surprising connections between the things we study and the world around us. What looks like an ordinary chemical structure at first can turn out to be similar to something familiar. There can sometimes be a wonderful discovery when you examine even the tiniest of things.

With a total of 458 votes, Analiezel So of the Advocates for Student-Centered Collaboration, Excellence, and Notable Directions (ASCEND) Party is elected president of the Future Educators’ Guild (FEG), the major organization of the College of Teacher Education (CoTEd) of Sorsogon State University (SorSU) – Sorsogon City Campus, for Academic Year 2026–2027.

Alongside So, Ershad Mohammad is elected vice president with 419 votes, Ma. Jean Irene Ramos as public information officer with 406 votes, and Evan Alimane and Menchie Pura as business managers with 299 and 325 votes, respectively.

In a message sent to The Artificer, So expressed her gratitude to the FEG community and reflected on the election campaign.

“From building a slate, securing approvals, planning the whole campaign, and facing the whole College of Teacher Education during the screening process, the entire journey has been demanding but worthwhile,” So said.

So further thanked the FEG members who participated in the election and entrusted their votes to the incoming leaders.

“To the members of the Future Educators’ Guild, thank you for taking part in this process and for entrusting your votes to the leaders of the next academic year. Regardless of the results, this election showed the true value of respect and service to our organization,” So added.

Meanwhile, FEG Election Committee (ElecCom) Chairperson Andrie Alam, expressed his appreciation to the students who participated in the electoral process.

“I am grateful to everyone who participated, supported the process, and helped make the election successful. Despite po sa pagbabago ng schedule ng election, wherein students were only allowed to vote during their vacant time, 77% of the CoTEd student population from 1st year to 3rd year still participated in the election. We also had some 4th-year students who participated despite their busy schedules. This shows how much the students value their right to vote and their role in choosing the leaders who will represent them,” Alam said.

Based on the figures provided by the ElecCom, 745 voters participated in the election, comprising the first to third-year CoTEd population of 959 students and 264 fourth-year students.

Alam also reminded the incoming officers of their responsibility to fulfill the commitments they made during the Miting de Avance.

“I hope you will fulfill the promises you made to the students during the Miting de Avance and turn those promises into concrete actions. Hindi lang sana puro pangako—sana makita rin namin ang mga ito sa inyong mga ginagawa. Always remember that being elected is not just a position, but a responsibility to serve and represent the students,” Alam emphasized.

Alam likewise urged the incoming officers to carefully select individuals who will fill the remaining vacant positions in the Guild.

“For the vacant positions, I hope you will be able to find the right and qualified people through the screening process that you will conduct. I hope you will choose individuals who are willing to serve, committed to their responsibilities, and genuinely willing to represent the students. I wish you all the best, and I hope you will lead with sincerity, transparency, accountability, and dedication,” Alam concluded.

The vote counting officially ended at 8:30 PM last night, Sept. 24, 2026, for both the Association of Biological and Clinical Sciences (ABCS), the major organization of the College of Health and Sciences (CoHaS), and FEG.

The ABCS ballots were counted at Room 107 of the Education Building, while the FEG ballots were counted at Rooms 108 and 109, with the presence of The Artificer, the official student publication of the campus, and The Synthesis, the official student publication of CoHaS.

1. Reach out to your respective year-level representatives

2. If you'll avail org shirt. Write your full name, section, and preferred polo shirt size on the form for organizational shirt handed by your representative.

3. If you'll avail lanyard. Write your full name, and section, on the form for lanyard handed by your representative.

4. Choose your mode of payment—either CASH or GCASH

5. Class Treasurers will collect the payment for each year level.

6. Once the collection of orders is completed, the class treasurers will hand over the payment to the ATOMS Treasurer — Annie M. Sotto

5. Once your order is placed, shirts and lanyard will be distributed to your respective blocks after the manufacturing process is completed.
