History of the SorSU Sinalampati Dance Troupe
The SorSU Sinalampati Dance Troupe traces its humble beginnings to 1996 when it was first established as the Sorsogon State College Dance Troupe (SSC-DT). The organization was founded by Prof. Merlyn M. Salandanan and Prof. Merriam M. Salandanan, whose vision was centered on the preservation and promotion of Sorsoganon culture through dance, music, and artistic performances.
During its early years, the SSC Dance Troupe actively participated in various cultural events both inside and outside the campus. The group became known for showcasing the rich traditions, customs, and identity of the people of Sorsogon. Through performances and cultural presentations, the troupe inspired students and communities to appreciate and preserve local heritage.
After the leadership of the founding advisers, the organization continued its mission under new guidance. In 2015, Prof. Ritzi C. Fullente became the adviser of the troupe, followed by Prof. Raquel A. Detera. During these years, the organization faced many challenges; however, the membersโ passion and dedication to cultural preservation never faded. Despite difficulties, the troupe continued striving for excellence and gradually established its name not only within Sorsogon Province but throughout the Bicol Region.
A new chapter in the organizationโs history began in 2019 under the leadership of Dr. Oliver F. Garbin. Bringing fresh vision and artistic direction, Dr. Garbin strengthened the troupeโs advocacy for cultural preservation and promotion through research and extension programs. His leadership emphasized community engagement, especially in grassroots cultural education and training. Through his initiatives, the organization became more active in teaching traditional dances and promoting local heritage among communities and young learners.
Also in 2019, the organization launched its first extension program entitled BAYLE (Bringing an Active and Youthful Lifestyle for Everyone). The program aimed to promote culture, wellness, and community participation through dance education and cultural activities. BAYLE became one of the organizationโs significant community-based initiatives that reached various sectors and grassroots communities.
As Dr. Garbin assumed the position as Head of Sports and Culture of Sorsogon State University, the advisory leadership of the troupe was entrusted to Prof. Tomas Encinares, followed by Prof. Lizel Lerios. In 2020, the organization underwent a significant transformation and was renamed the SorSU Dance Theater and Cultural Group, while Dr. Garbin continued serving as its Artistic Director.
Following the leadership of Prof. Lizel Lerios, Prof. Kristel Kimbelly Dellomas became the adviser of the organization and continues to serve the troupe today alongside Dr. Garbin as adviser and Artistic Director.
In 2025, another historic milestone was achieved through the amendment of the organizationโs Constitution and By-Laws. Based on the research conducted by Dr. Oliver F. Garbin, it was discovered that the original name of the famous Bicolano dance Pantomina was Sinalampati. Inspired by this cultural discovery and recognizing the organizationโs role as the premier dance troupe representing Sorsogon on regional, national, and international stages, the members collectively agreed to adopt the new name:
SorSU Sinalampati Dance Troupe
The name symbolizes the image of a dove soaring high toward greater excellence, embodying the organizationโs mission of cultural preservation, artistic excellence, and service to the community.
In the same year, the organization launched another extension program entitled KUNDAY (Kickstarting Unity and Diversity Through Active Youthfulness). This new initiative continues the troupeโs commitment to community engagement, youth empowerment, cultural education, and inclusivity through dance and cultural activities.
Today, the SorSU Sinalampati Dance Troupe continues to receive numerous awards and recognitions in both regional and national competitions. More importantly, it remains committed to nurturing talented dancers who possess not only artistic skills but also deep passion and dedication in promoting and preserving Filipino and Sorsoganon culture for future generations.
As the organization continues to soar to greater heights, the year 2025 marks another remarkable milestone as the troupe prepares to celebrate its 30th Founding Anniversary this coming December. Three decades of excellence, passion, cultural service, and artistic dedication stand as a testament to the unwavering commitment of its founders, advisers, alumni, and members who continuously keep the spirit of Sorsoganon culture alive through dance and performance arts.
