ESMC Conducts Planning Session for Next Academic Year’s Sustainability Activities

The Environmental Sustainability Management Committee (ESMC) of Sorsogon State University held a strategic planning session last July 9, 2025 at the University Library Conference Room to map out its environmental initiatives and programs for the upcoming academic year 2025-2026. The session brought together the members of the committee, namely Ar. Garner Ted Olavere, Dr. Saturnino Carranza, Dr. Cris Jaramiel, Engr. Dennis Mujar, Engr. Rap Anthony Tatad, and Engr. Juliene Marie Janer. They discussed the direction of the university’s sustainability efforts and reinforced its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Held in a collaborative atmosphere, the planning session served as a platform to evaluate the successes and challenges of the past year’s initiatives in order to improve the upcoming activities.

Priority Programs for the Upcoming Year
1. Information Dissemination Campaign
A major component of next year’s strategy is a stronger information dissemination campaign. This includes producing brochures and audio-visual presentations on ESMC policies, running social media and radio campaigns, and organizing information drives. The committee will also conduct orientations and lectures to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable behavior within the university.

2. Launch of Green Month (January)
In the last quarter of 2025, the ESMC will launch a series of activities in celebration of Green Month. Highlights of the event will include trainings and seminars on environmental sustainability, a cleanest and greenest offices and classrooms contest, and a student organization competition for the design and fabrication of innovative trash bins. These activities aim to promote environmental awareness, encourage sustainable practices, and foster a culture of active participation.

With a renewed sense of purpose and a clear roadmap for the year ahead, the ESMC is set to lead SorSU in another year of meaningful environmental action - guided by policy, powered by participation, and sustained through continuous education and advocacy.

Compost pits in Sorsogon City Campus

Sorsogon State University has established open compost pits on campus for the disposal and processing of biodegradable wastes. This project demonstrates the university’s commitment to sustainable waste management.

By preventing biodegradable wastes from ending up in landfills, the compost pits minimize the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The compost produced can also be used to improve soil fertility in the campus, supporting sustainable landscaping.

Waste is regularly collected, sorted, and deposited into the pits, with proper maintenance to ensure efficient composting. SorSU encourages its students, faculty, and staff to segregate their waste at the source and to actively participate in composting initiatives. Through the introduction of open compost pits, SorSU continues to lead by example, offering practical and impactful solutions for managing biodegradable wastes.

ESMC mandates the greening of offices and workspaces

In a progressive step toward promoting workplace wellness and environmental sustainability, the ESMC has launched a policy on greening offices and workspaces. This initiative aims to integrate green plants into indoor spaces, emphasizing their positive impacts on both employee well-being and the environment.

This policy reflects SorSU’s dedication to fostering both environmental stewardship and the health of its employees. The committee encourages cooperation from all university members to ensure the success of this initiative, believing it will enhance the work environment and inspire a greener, healthier culture within the university.

Sorsogon State University, as part of its commitment to sustainability in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has rolled out a campus-wide policy on energy conservation. This initiative was formalized through the Office Memorandum No. 074, s.2024, issued by the university president Dr. Geraldine F. de Jesus.

Starting September 16, 2024, the university mandates turning off all air-conditioning units (ACUs) in all offices during specific hours – from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 4:00 to 5:00 PM on workdays.

In addition to the ACU schedules, the memorandum emphasizes shutting down and unplugging unused electronic devices and appliances. This promotes responsible energy usage, thereby reducing electrical risks and conserving the institution’s resources.

The implementation of these energy-saving measures is regularly monitored by the Environmental Sustainability Management Committee (ESMC), which is tasked with ensuring compliance. This initiative reflects SorSU’s leadership in adopting progressive and practical steps toward sustainability.

SorSU Conducts Regular Clean-Up Drives

Sorsogon State University (SorSU) has taken a proactive role in environmental stewardship by regularly conducting university-wide clean-up drives every last Friday of the month. This initiative reflects SorSU’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement, aligning with its mission to foster environmental awareness among its students, faculty, and staff.

The clean-up drives span all four of the university campuses, namely Sorsogon City campus, Bulan Campus, Castilla Campus, and Magallanes campus. Each college and department participate, encouraging collaboration and reinforcing the importance of teamwork in achieving environmental goals.

By involving students and staff in these efforts, the institution empowers its members to extend these practices beyond the campus. This program underscores SorSU’s dedication to environmental advocacy, which resonates with its broader goals of producing socially and environmentally conscious graduates who can lead sustainable initiatives in their respective fields.

ESMC deploys trash bins around Sorsogon City Campus

In its ongoing effort to promote environmental responsibility, ESMC has installed trash bins across the campus, specifically designed to encourage waste segregation.

Each set of trash bins is color-coded and labeled to simplify proper waste disposal:

• Residual Waste: For items that cannot be recycled or composted, such as used napkins, contaminated plastics, soiled styrofoams, and other non-recyclable items.
• Biodegradable Waste: For food scraps, garden trimmings, and other organic materials that can be composted.
• Recyclable Waste: For paper, plastic bottles, metals, and other items that can be reused or reprocessed.

The strategic placement of these bins in classrooms, hallways, outdoor areas, and other high-traffic zones ensures accessibility and convenience, encouraging students, faculty, and staff to actively participate in waste segregation. This initiative aims to foster a culture of environmental consciousness by teaching the university community to recognize and sort their waste responsibly. SorSU envisions this program as part of its long-term strategy to institutionalize sustainable practices.
